Shvedova, Brengle, Capra Among Bronx Open Wildcards

The EmblemHealth Bronx Open, a women’s $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event, added USTA Wildcard selections including main draw players Madison Brengle, Amanda McDowell, Lauren Embree, Ester Goldfeld, and qualifying players Yaroslava Shvedova, Beatrice Capra, Jacqueline Cako, Zoe Scandalis, Marjorie Ondeck, and Jennifer Tuchband.


Main Draw Wildcards

Madison Brengle (No. 191) has won five ITF Titles in her career (two singles, three doubles). Earlier this year, the Delaware native won the ITF title in Hammond, LA.


Last week Amanda McDowell (No. 477) won the USTA Pro Circuit’s The Heartland Clinic USTA Women’s Tennis Clinic event in St. Joseph, MO. The former Georgia Tech Bulldog was named the 2008 ITA National Player of the Year and recipient of the 2008 Honda Award for Tennis after capturing the NCAA Singles title.

Florida University standout Lauren Embree (No. 800) led the Gators to the 2011 NCAA women’s tennis championship. The 20 year-old first debuted on the USTA Circuit at age 16.


Ester Goldfeld (No. 807) is a Brooklyn, NY native and the #1 high school recruit from New York. She is committed to play for the Duke women’s tennis team in the fall.


Qualifying Draw Wildcards

Yaroslava Shvedova (No. 143 singles, No. 7 doubles) is the defending 2010 Wimbledon and US Open Doubles Champion (with Vania King). The 23 year-old also has won one WTA singles tour title and three ITF singles titles in her career.


Beatrice Capra (No. 252.) won a wild card playoff tournament to receive a wild card entry to her first senior Grand Slam tournament, the 2010 U.S. Open, where she reached the second round by defeating Karolina Sprem. Capra will play for Duke University in the fall.


Jacqueline Cako (No. 770) captured two doubles and two singles titles including the ITF event in Hilton Head (2009, 2010 doubles), the 2009 ITF event in Wichita (singles), and the 2008 ITF event in Southlake.

A top recruit from San Diego, Zoe Scandalis (No. 960) recently won the Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center Opportunity Tournament and received a receive a wild card into the qualifying draw of the Mercury Insurance Open. She will play tennis for USC in the fall.


Marjorie Ondeck (unranked) is a local player from Monroe, CT. She graduated from Memphis University in 2009 where she played for the Tigers’ tennis team.


Jennifer Tuchband (unranked) is a local player from Milburn, NJ. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2002 where she was ranked as high No. 78 in the nation.
