1989 – Capriati Wins the French Open and U.S. Open Junior Singles titles
1990 March – At age 13 years, 11 months makes her professional debut in the Virginia Slims of Florida. With the media descending upon the event to document her debut, sportswriter Sally Jenkins nicknames the event “The Virginia Slims of Capriatiâ€. Capriati reaches the final, defeating No. 10 Helena Sukova en route, before losing to Gabriela Sabatini in the final. Capriati becomes the youngest tennis player to reach the final of a professional event.
1990 March – Capriati appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with the caption “And She’s Only 13!â€
1990 April – Capriati defeats No. 5 and reigning French Open champion Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario 6-1, 6-1, in the 3R of the Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head. She advances to the final, where she falls to No. 2 Martina Navratilova.
1990 April – Capriati debuts in the WTA rankings at No. 25
1990 June – Capriati becomes the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist when she reaches that round at Roland Garros. She drops only 20 games through the first five rounds, before losing to Monica Seles in the semifinal.
1990 October – Capriati wins her first professional event, taking a title in Puerto Rico over No. 8 Zina Garrison, becoming the fourth youngest titlest in history. With the title, she reaches the Top Ten in the world, becoming the youngest ever player to rank in the Top Ten.
1991 July – Capriati becomes the youngest ever Wimbledon semifinalist, defeating defending champion Navratilova in the quarterfinals.
1991 August – Capriati records her first win over a world No. 1, defeating Monica Seles in the finals of San Diego, winning the match 7-6 in the third set. This was the youngest final in history, with the combined age of the finalists of 33 years.
1991 September – Capriati defeats defending champion Sabatini in the quarterfinals of the US Open, advancing to her second consecutive Grand Slam semifinal. She loses the semifinal 7-6 in the third set to Seles.
1992 March – Capriati defeats Seles in the quarterfinals of Miami, ending Seles streak of 21 consecutive tournament finals reached.
1992 August – Capriati earns the gold medal in Women’s Singles at the Barcelona Olympics, defeating Sanchez-Vicario in the semifinals, and Steffi Graf in the finals; it is Capriati’s only career win over Graf.
1993 August – Capriati suffers her first opening round loss at a Grand Slam, losing to Leila Meskhi at the US Open.
1996 February – Capriati, playing in only her second tournament of the last 2 ½ years, reaches the quarterfinals in Essen Germany, before losing to No. 12 Jana Novotna
1998 June – Capriati wins a first round match at Wimbledon over Nicole Pratt, her first victory at a Grand Slam event in five years.
1999 May – Capriati wins the title at Strasbourg, her first tournament title in six years.
2000 January – Ranked No. 21, Capriati advances to the semifinals of the Australian Open, her best result at a Grand Slam event since the 1991 U.S. Open.
2001 January – Capriati wins her first Grand Slam event, taking the Australian Open title by defeating No. 4 Seles in the quarterfinals, No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals and No. 1 Martina Hingis in the finals. With the victory, Capriati re-enters the top ten for the first time in almost ten years, at No. 7.
2001 June – Capriati wins her second Grand Slam title by capturing the French Open over Kim Clijsters. The match features the longest 3rd set in Grand Slam history, with Capriati prevailing 12-10.
2002 January – Capriati defends her Australian Open title, saving 4 match points in the final vs. Hingis. It’s Capriati’s third and final Grand Slam title.
2003 August – Capriati wins her 14th and final tournament title in New Haven.
2004 September – Capriati, in what would be her final Grand Slam appearance, defeats Serene Williams in a closely contested quarterfinal, before losing to Elena Dementieva in a third set tiebreaker in the semifinals.
2004 November – Capriati plays her final event, losing to Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals of Philadelphia. She finishes the year ranked No. 10, but injuries prevent her from continuing to play professionally.
2012 July – Capriati is inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
