FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – The men’s and women’s third seeds proved to be deadly against their opponents during  the Wednesday evening session at the US Open. Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova made quick work of their opponents.
Sharapova opened the night session with a 6-1, 6-0 stomping of Spain’s Lourdes DomÃnguez Lino. The Russian evaluated her performance:†I thought I played really well and stayed aggressive. I think she’s someone that likes to have a lot of time. I think her best results are on clay courts where she has a lot of time.
“I didn’t want to give that to her, play my game, and open up the court. Overall I’m pretty happy, and happy to be in the third round again.â€
The statistics were staggering for Sharapova winning 54 of 78 points played in a match which lasted less than an hour.
Murray toppled world No. 118, Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. After the match, the questions posed to Murray were not so much about his match, nor recently winning the gold medal in singles, but focused on the extra attention the Scotsman has been receiving and whether or not he’s seen the nude photos of Britain’s Prince Harry.
“It has been a little bit different. I’ve had a few people with cameras waiting outside my hotel, asking very strange questions,” said a smiling Murray who would not comment on whether he has seen the controversial photos.
So how is Murray enjoying the nightlife of New York City? “With the coach that I’ve got (Ivan Lendl), I’m sure that I’ll be on the practice court tomorrow, unfortunately,” noted Murray.
Murray may not be having fun off-court, but he’s the first man into the third round and having fun beating opponents on-court.
