Klizan Upsets Tsonga to move into Third Round of US Open

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – In the upset of the US Open tournament to date, fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France fell to Slovakia’s Martin Kilzan 6‑4, 1‑6, 6‑1, 6‑3 in the second round.

“I was coming to the match to play a very solid game,” said the 52nd ranked Klizan.  “I wanted to play really good tennis to play with the top star player.

“I played very, very well today.  I mean, I was concentrating each point and I won; I’m very happy that I did.

“First set 6‑4, then I lost 1‑6.  In the first game I was leading Love‑40 on his serve, so if I break him it’s a little different story then.  He hold the serve, and then I don’t know what happened, but he started play very good.  He killed me 6‑1.

“So it was a little bit different set than the first one.  Then again, I started to feel better and better after each point and I won 6‑1, and then I broke him first game again the fourth set and I was holding the serve good.  Then I made a very, very ‑‑ a lot of unforced errors when I was leading 4‑0.

“But, I don’t know.  I won 6‑3”

“In the second set I played well,” said Tsonga. “But anyway, at the beginning of the second set also it was dangerous for me, and finally I came back.  I don’t know, today I was not in a good shape.  I didn’t play, you know, good tennis.

“It seemed like I couldn’t, you know, hit the ball enough hard, you know, to put my opponents out of position.  I don’t really know why it was like this today, but sometimes it’s happen with me.  I don’t know, I guess.”

“He’s like No. 6 in the world and I beat him,” Said Klizan.  “I feel great.  I don’t know what to say.  I’m very happy, and that’s it.

“Third round, I think it’s my best result in my career, and I’m looking forward to play Saturday third round.  There is a chance to win again.

“I was concentrating only on my serve to play good game, and I didn’t look at him, what he’s doing.  I didn’t care what he’s doing.  I just was concentrating, thinking straight to me.”

“I’m not very satisfied,” Tsonga said.  “I mean, it’s something normal.  You know, I lost second round.  I’m used to play round of 16 or quarterfinal.  Sometimes semis.

“I mean, it’s like this.  It’s tennis, you know.  Today I didn’t play my best tennis and my opponent was better than me, you know, whole match I think, and that’s it.

“I’m disappointed, because anyway, it’s a major and I didn’t lost this round, you know, since couple of years now.

“Yeah, so I’m disappointed, but anyway, you know, it’s tennis.  Sometimes you win; sometimes you lost.

“Of course, it’s always sad when you lost, but, you know, I will wait for another good moment.  I will forget it.”

Klizan will face the winner of Jeremy Chardy – Matthew Ebden for a spot in the fourth round.
