Federer Upset by Berdych in US Open Quarters

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – No. 1 Roger Federer was upset by No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the US Open semifinals for the first time.

Berdych delivered on his serves with 14 aces and was accurate with his hard penetrating groundstrokes. Federer made many unforced errors, especially on his forehand side. The Swiss made a total of 40 unforced errors.

“With my game I’m able to make him some trouble,“ Berdych told reporters.” Even if he’s playing well…. there is something in my game he doesn’t like.”

“There is no better moment than this one so far,” said Berdych,

“I just didn’t come up with the goods tonight,” Federer said after the match. “It was unfortunate.”

“I’m disappointed. I really expect myself to play better tonight, especially at night I have had such a great record,” said a visibly disappointed Federer to media.

“I felt good. Such an amazing summer I had. I really thought I was going to come out and play a solid match. I didn’t do that tonight. Obviously there is a bit of a letdown now.”

“I’m disappointed. I really expected myself to play better tonight, especially at night. I’ve had such a great record.

“I should have never lost the first set. It’s a disappointing loss. I expected myself to play better.”

This marked Federer’s earliest loss at the US Open since 2003. This is the first major since the 2004 French Open that neither Federer nor, Rafael Nadal made the semifinals.

“I should come in here with tons of energy and ready to go,” Federer said. “Who knows, if you get that day, that match in with Fish, come through with more confidence, maybe the first three matches didn’t quite give me that. Who knows? I don’t put that down as a negative, really. I just didn’t come up with the goods tonight. It was unfortunate.”

For Berdych, it’s his fourth win over Federer in their last seven meetings and his first ever night match in Ashe Stadium. I t was also the first time Federer has ever lost on Ashe at night.

“No. 1 has another a role to play, but this obviously is a setback,” said Federer. “But again, the season is not over. I hope to finish strong at the end, and particularly in the indoor season.”

“I cannot count on beating Roger in straight sets and not getting in any trouble,” said Berdych. “I was always careful that anything could happen. Actually, it happened in the third set that he came strongly back. But for that, I’m even more happy with the way that I was able to hold his pressure and then add something extra for the fourth set.”

Berdych will play Andy Murray in the semifinals on Saturday. The Czech has a 4-2 against the Scot.
