(November 30, 2012) La Jolla– Top-seeded Dina McBride of Valencia, Calif., is set to face second-seeded Ros Nideffer of San Diego (Rancho Bernardo) for the women’s singles title on Saturday at the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships.
The women’s singles final is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (PST) at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
McBride, a former collegiate tennis star at the University of San Diego, reached the women’s singles final last year, but had to retire early in the match when she tore her Achilles tendon. She admitted she is not familiar with Nideffer, a former touring tennis professional who was once ranked No. 15 in the world.
“I don’t know her that well, so I’m going to have to try and figure it out as I go,” McBride said. “I have a lot of different tactics I can use in my game, so I’ll just pick what I need when I get out there and see if it’s working.”
The 52-year-old Nideffer captured the USTA National 40 Hard Court women’s singles title in 2009. Earlier this year, she won the Women’s 50 singles titles at the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships and USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships.
The men’s singles semifinals, featuring top-seeded Oren Motevassel of Rancho Mirage, Calif., versus third-seeded Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif., and fourth-seeded Martin Barba of San Diego, against unseeded Teet Ratsep of Aliso Viejo, Calif., will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The Father / Son and Grandfather / Grandson USTA Hard Court Doubles Championships got underway on Friday morning before rain suspended play in the afternoon. Both events will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday, Dec. 2.
