Berdych, Cilic and Wawrinka Upset in Chennai

(January 4, 2012) Seeds Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic and Stanislas Wawrinka were all knocked out of the Chennai quarterfinals on Friday.

World No.6 and top seed Berdych fell 7-5 2-6 6-3 to the 80th ranked Spaniard Roberto Agut.

Two-time champion Cilic went down to the 47th ranked Benoit Paire of France 6-4 1-6 7-5 and will meet Agut on Saturday for a spot in the final.

In his first- ever ATP semifinal, Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, took out fourth seed Wawrinka 6-2 7-6 (8/6).

“He was a better player on the court,” said Wawrinka. “I didn’t really know him, but I knew he’d play good tennis. Today, I didn’t play my best tennis, but in the first tournament of the year it is never easy.”

Bedene will meet Janko Tipsarevic in the semis.
