(January 17, 2013) With her friend American rapper Redfoo in attendance, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka demolished Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou 6-1, 6-0 on Thursday to move into the third round of the Australian Open.
Azarenka’s only challenge in the 55 minute match came in the fourth game of the second set when the Belarusian had to save three break points.
The No. 1 player and defending Australian Open champion hit 21 winners in the victory, capturing 83 percent of points on her first serve.
“I felt really good,“ Azarenka said of the match. “I enjoyed a lot the way I was focused. I was definitely something that I stepped it up from my first match, and I was in the zone trying to execute all of my shots. I was trying to make everything happen, and that’s what I’m happy about.”
Despite her easy win, Azarenka cautioned that you can take any opponent for granted.
“Never underestimate anybody,“ she said. “Anybody on a given day can play outstanding match. You know, especially when they have nothing to lose.
“I was just trying to focus on one point at a time and not looking too much at the scoreboard or anything. Just really executing myself and stay in the moment.”
The Belarusian will now play Jamie Hampton of the United States in the third round.
To keep her No. 1 ranking, Azarenka needs to win the tournament.
