Serena Williams Top Women’s Seed at 2013 US Open

Serena Williams in Cincinnatti 2013

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 20, 2013 – The USTA announced today that world No. 1 and defending champion Serena Williams has been named the top seed in women’s singles at the 2013 US Open.  The 2013 US Open will be played August 26 – September 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The US Open Women’s Singles Championship is presented by JPMorgan Chase.

Following Williams will be No. 2 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, the reigning Australian Open champion and runner-up to Williams last year at the US Open; No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova of Russia, who has completed the career Grand Slam last year by winning the French Open; and No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon this year.

The US Open followed the WTA rankings released yesterday to determine the women’s singles seeds. This is the 12th consecutive year that the US Open seeded 32 players in both singles events.

Williams, 31, has a 77-4 record since starting a remarkable run at Wimbledon last year – including the Wimbledon title, an Olympic gold medal and US Open titles in 2012, and the French Open title this year.  Overall, she owns 16 Grand Slam singles titles and won her fourth US Open crown last year, tying her for third with Martina Navratilova for most US Open women’s singles titles in the Open Era behind Steffi Graf (5) and Chris Evert (6).

Australia’s Samantha Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion, is seeded No. 12, and 2004 US Open singles champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia is seeded No. 28. Two-time US Open champion Venus Williams is the only former champion unseeded.

After Serena Williams, the remaining seeded Americans are No. 16 seed Sloane Stephens and No. 24 seed Jamie Hampton.

The singles draws for the 2013 US Open will be conducted live during an official draw ceremony on Thursday, August 22, at 12 p.m. ET at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The draw will be streamed live on USOpen.org.  Serena Williams and Andy Murray, the defending US Open champions, will make an appearance at the event.
