(September 3, 2013) FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – Serena Williams handed Carla Suarez Navarro a double-bagel – 6-0, 6-0 defeat on Tuesday night at the US Open.
Williams hit 20 winners to Suarez Navarro’s 3 and Williams won a total of 53 points to Suarez Navarro’s 18. The first set took 20 minutes and the second 33 minutes.
“I definitely think the wind was tough for her, and especially on that court it just gets really windy down there,” Williams said. “With a one hand(ed backhand) it doesn’t help, so it kind of almost worked into my favor.”
Serena Williams’ 6-0, 6-0, win over No. 18 Carla Suarez Navarro in the US Open quarterfinals is the second double-bagel victory in the quarterfinals of the US Open in the Open Era (since 1968). The first was in 1989, when No. 2 Martina Navratilova beat No. 7 Manuela Maleeva, 6-0, 6-0.
Williams will play Li Na in the semifinals on Friday.
“She’s a great challenge,” Williams said of Li. “She moves really well. She does everything well. I think the challenge of playing someone like her is how do you beat a player that does everything so well?
“I’m going to have to, in the next couple days, think about that and come up with an answer to that.”
