(September 19, 2013) Andy Murray will have back surgery next week and will miss the rest of the tennis year, including the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London from November 4-11.

In a statement put out by Murray’s management company: “the aim is to be fully fit for the new season. But after recently playing on hard courts and clay, Andy once again sought medical advice about solving the issue once and for all,”

Murray who has had problems with his back before, put him out of the French Open. He came back strongly on grass by winning Queen’s Club and his first Wimbledon title, breaking a 77-year drought for players from Great Britain.

From Andy Murray’s website:

Next week, Andy is set to undergo minor back surgery in an effort to clear up a long-standing back problem.

The issue flared up again during the Rome Masters this year when Andy was forced to retire and he sought advice from a range of specialists in May. After a successful return on the more forgiving grass courts, Andy enjoyed success at Queen’s and Wimbledon, but after recently playing on hard-courts and clay, Andy once again sought medical advice about solving the issue once and for all.

The aim is to be fully fit for the new season.
