(November 3, 2013) Simona Halep of Romania captured the WTA Tournament of Champions over Sam Stosur of Australia 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 for her sixth title of 2013 and of her career. Only No. Serena Williams won more WTA titles in 2013.
Nursing a left leg injury, Help held her nerve to close out the match, winni ng five game on the trot, 20 of the last 26 points to close out the match in the third set.
No. 1 seed Halep was perfect in the group stage. Halep had most of the support of the crowd coming from nearby Romania.
“I want to thank all my supporters here, who came to support me and helped me win the title,” Halep said.
“I really wanted to win this tournament, so I’m just happy! It has been a great tournament for me. I want to thank everyone who came to support me this week, they helped me a lot. I also want to thank my team, my friends and my family, and of course Ilie Nastase who came to support me!”
“It was a tough match, Simona was too good today,” Stosur said. “I want to congratulate her. For me, it’s time to get some rest.”
“Congrats to Simona on playing a great final. She’s a very good player – she got me a couple weeks ago in Moscow, and again it was very hard today – but I’m happy with the week I had. Now I’ll take a break and then think about next season in a few weeks when I start training again.”
Halep is expected to move to No. 11 in the rankings on Monday.
