Serena Williams Wins Third AP Female Athlete of the Year Award

(December 25, 2013) For the third time, No. 1 Serena Williams has won The Associated Press‘ 2013 Female Athlete of the Year in a vote by news organizations. Williams received 55 of 96 votes in the final AP results tally.

Williams also captured the award in 2002 and 2009.

2013 was a career year for Williams who captured 11 titles including two majors – the French Open and the US Open. Williams went 78-4 on the year which included a 34-match win streak.

Coming in second place was Brittney Griner, a two-time AP Player of the Year in college basketball and the No. 1 overall pick in this past WNBA draft with 14 votes. Swimmer Missy Franklin came in third with 10 votes.

The 17-time major champion Williams begins her 2014 tennis year by playing an event in Brisbane, Australia which begins on December 29.
