(January 4, 2013) World No. 1 Rafael Nadal defeated Gael Monfils 6-1, 6-7(5), 62 for his first Qatar ExxonMobil Open title.
For Nadal it was his 61st ATP World Tour title, moving past Andre Agassi for eighth on the Open Era title-leaders list.
Nadal’s run to the title was a challenging one this week, playing three, three set matches against Tobias Kamke, Peter Gojowczyk and Monfils.
Of the five matches Nadal played this week he was taken the three-set distance three times: By Tobias Kamke in the second round, Peter Gojowczyk in the quarterfinals, and then by Monfils.
“Every victory is important and the title today means a lot to me, Nadal said. “It is the first time in my career that I am able to start the season with a victory. That’s always important.”
“Rafa put pressure on me from the first point, Monfils said. “He was very aggressive from the first game and it was tougher for me to adjust. It’s always tough to play against him and at the end he was a bit better than me.”
