Nine Retirements During First Round of the Australina Open Equals a Record


(January 15, 2014) There were 9 retirements (8 men and 1 woman) in the first round at this year’s Australian Open. This equals the record for most retirements/walkovers in a single round at any Slam in the Open Era. There were also 9 retirements in the 1st round at the 2011 US Open and in the 2nd round at 2013 Wimbledon.

Tommy Haas – shoulder
John Isner – foot
Radek Stepanek – neck
Julian Reister – no reason given
Robin Haase – left leg cramps
Bernard Tomic – groin

Polona Hercog – right rib

The most singles retirements/walkovers at the Australian Open in the Open Era is 13 in 2003 (9 men and 4 women) and 2012 (9 men and 4 women). The Grand Slam Open Era record is 17 players (11 men and 6 women) at the 2011 US Open.
