Federer has played only one first-round tie since 2004. His last first-round home tie came when Switzerland was shut out by the USA in February 2012.
Serbia won the Davis Cup in 2010 and will field a team which lacks top players world No. 2 Novak Djokovic and Serbia No. 2 Janko Tipsarevic. At No. 102 in the world, Dujan Lajovic is the highest ranked member of team Serbia.
The tie begins on Friday.
