(February 7, 2014) Serena Williams has withdrawn from the 2014 BNP Paribas Open. Statements from Williams and BNP Paribas Open Tournament Director Steve Simon are below.
“After careful consideration, I will not return to the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open this year. I send my best wishes to everyone involved with the tournament.”
“We are disappointed that Serena has withdrawn from the 2014 BNP Paribas Open. We wish her the very best of luck in the year ahead and hope that she will decide to play here next year.”

Williams has not played in the tournament since 2001. Thw tournament begins on March 3.

Williams also withdrew from the Qatar Open due to a back injury from the Australian Open. The Qatar Open begins Monday in Doha.
