La Jolla, Calif. – (May 17, 2014) – Consolation singles finals will highlight Sunday’s action as the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Championships conclude Sunday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. (PDT).
The 50 and over consolation championship will feature San Diego’s Colleen Clery Ferrell versus fifth-seeded Eleanor Hammargren of San Clemente, Calif.
Clery Ferrell, who fell to top-seeded Ros Nideffer, 6-1, 6-2, in the main draw quarterfinals earlier in the week, advanced to the consolation title match with a 7-5, 6-4, semifinal victory over fellow San Diegan Nancy Abler-Sanchez on Saturday morning
Playing on Court No. 8 on a cool, breezy day, Clery Ferrell got off to a slow start and fell behind 3-1 in the first set. She later managed to find the range on her shots and got back on serve. At 5-5, Clery Ferrell scored a key service break and went on to serve out the set.
In the second set, Clery Ferrell jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Alber-Sanchez rallied to win four of the next five games. At 4-4, Clery Ferrell won eight of the last ten points to close out the match in one-hour and 45 minutes.
“It’s very special. I’m happy to be in the (consolation) final. I would have been happy just to win a couple of matches, but things kept running my way,” Clery Ferrell said after her victory. “I have no expectations. I’m going to do the best I can and hope for a good effort.”
In the 60 and over consolation final, Houston’s Susan Bramlette will play San Diego’s Carol Gay. The 70 and over consolation championship will pit Heather Fiscalini, Modesto, Calif., against Dori Devries, Rancho Mirage, Calif.
