La Jolla, Calif. – (May 18, 2014) – The USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Championships came to a close on a cool, breezy day at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club as consolation singles titles were contested in three age divisions.
Fifth-seeded Eleanor Hammargren of San Clemente, Calif., used a steady baseline game to capture the 50 and over consolation title with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over San Diego’s Colleen Clery Ferrell in one-hour and 14 minutes.
Hammargren, who lost to second-seeded Tracy Houk, 7-5, 6-2, in the 50 and over main draw quarterfinals, finished the tournament on a winning note, putting together a three-match winning streak in the singles consolation draw.
“It feels good. I didn’t expect to get this far. It’s been a while since I’ve played a USTA tournament. This tournament is tough,” Hammargren said. “It’s always great (to play) at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. They always treat the players so well.”
In addition to capturing the 50 and over consolation singles title, Hammargren teamed with fellow San Clemente resident Jennifer Lyons to win the 50 and over main draw doubles championship on Saturday afternoon.
In the 60 and over consolation final, Houston’s Susan Bramlette won the title with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory over San Diego’s Carol Gay.
Heather Fiscalini of Modesto, Calif., defeated Dori Devries of Rancho Mirage, Calif., 6-3, 6-3 to win the 70 and over consolation singles championship.
