(May 26, 2014) After a rain delay pushed back the start for over an hour, Maria Sharapova won her opening at the French Open on Monday easily beating Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-2 in 61 minutes.
Sharapova, who is the seventh seed, won Roland Garros in 2012, she lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final.
“It’s always nice to get out there on a day like this. It’s good to play first match, as you know,” Sharapova told media. “Hopefully you’ll be able to finish the match today with the weather conditions being as they are. It’s always nice to get through.”
Other women advancing early on Monday were Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova, No. 12 Flavia Pennetta and No. 16 Sabine Lisicki.
