San Diego, Calif. — (June 8, 2014) – Seventeen-year-old Logan Smith of Carlsbad, Calif., and fifth-seeded Monica Robinson of Valley Center, Calif., finished with impressive performances to win titles at the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships at the Balboa Tennis Club.

Robinson, who recently completed her first year of intercollegiate tennis at the University of Notre Dame where she posted a singles record of 24-10, took home the women’s singles championship with a 6-3, 6-0, victory over unseeded Alexandra Valenstein of Laguna Hills, Calif.

“I’m honored. I’m really excited. It’s been great coming back to my hometown, playing in front of my parents and my coach,” Robinson said after her victory as she accepted her USTA gold ball for winning the national championship. “It’s been a lot of fun. This tournament has a great feeling.”

Smith, a 17-year-old from Carlsbad, Calif., captured the men’s singles title after defeating second-seeded Deiton Baughman of Carson, Calif., 6-4, 6-3, in one-hour and 30 minutes.  Smith will travel to England later this month to play in the Wimbledon Boys’ Junior competition.

After being awarded a USTA gold ball following his victory in the men’s final, Smith credited the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships for helping him tune up his game in preparation for his next tournament.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s special to come out here and take a title. It’s a big tournament with a great atmosphere. The crowd comes out and I had a lot of support today,” he said. “I got to work on my game a lot for the upcoming tournament at Wimbledon.  It definitely helps.”
