(June 9, 2014) The oldest and the youngest members in the WTA top 100 won on Monday at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, a grass court tune-up for Wimbledon.

In a battle of teenagers, seventeen-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland beat  Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-4, 6-4, while Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, the elder stateswoman of the WTA at the age of 43, defeated Paula Ormaechea 6-3, 6-1.

Bencic is coached by the mother of former No. 1 Martina Hingis, Melanie Monitor.

New British No.1 Heather Watson leads the line-up at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Tuesday. Watson takes on Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak on the Ann Jones Centre Court on day two of the WTA Premier event at the Priory Club.

“I think it is a great tournament here with a lot of improvements over the years,” said Watson, speaking ahead of the event. “I think the quality of the grass and the tournament has just been going up and up every year. It’s just got a great atmosphere”.

Ana Ivanovic, top seed for the tournament, will also be making her 2014 Aegon Classic debut on Tuesday when she plays experienced German Mona Barthel. Defending champion Daniela Hantuchova faces rising Swiss star Belinda Bencic after Bencic knocked out last year’s runner-up Donna Vekic on Monday in an all-teen battle which captivated the opening day crowd.

Also on Tuesday, Watson’s fellow Britons Naomi Broady and Johanna Konta play their first round matches. Broady plays Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, while Konta must contend with 14th seed Kurumi Nara of Japan.
