(June 14, 2015) Monica Niculescu and Ana Konjuh will contest the rain-delayed final of the Nottingham Open on Monday.
The tournament had been hit by bad weather coming into the finals weekend, with play again halted during Sunday.
Niculescu of Romania reached her first grass court singles final with an upset win over top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
“The goal is always to win the tournament but today I couldn’t,” Radwanska said. “She was playing very good tennis and was very solid from the beginning until the end. No mistakes. It was her day.”
The 17-year-old Konjuh had to win two matches on Sunday. After beating Sachia Vickery 6-2, 6-2 in the delayed quarterfinal, the Croatian beat No. 5 seed Alison Riske 6-4, 6-3.
“After I played the (Vickery) match I got the chance to relax a bit because I was tired, but that’s a part of our job. You just have to go with it,” World No. 87 Konjuh said.
On reaching her first WTA final, she said: “It’s been amazing. My season didn’t start that well, I’ve been in a bad mood these last few months. Grass is my favourite surface so I’ve come here with nothing to expect and I’ll do my best in the final.”
