La Jolla, Calif. – (May 13, 2016) – When Ros Nideffer and Nathalie Herreman-Bagby played on the Women’s Tennis Association circuit during the 1980s and 1990s, they faced each other six times, with the last meeting taking place in 1993.
The two former touring tennis professionals will meet again on Saturday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for the first time in 23 years, as they play for the 50s singles title at the USTA National Women’s 50-90 Hard Court Championships at 10:30 a.m. (PDT).
“This is the match I’ve been looking forward to playing – against Nathalie. It should be fun. It’s great that we’re both still playing and enjoying the game,” said Nideffer, who is attempting to win the 50s singles title for the third straight year. “Hopefully we’ll enjoy (the match) and challenge each other. It will be a tough match. I’m going to have to play well.”
Herreman-Bagby, 50, a native of France who now lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif., clearly recalled the first time she played Nideffer when she was just 17 years old. “I remember my first victory against her because it was a really big moment for me. It was at the French Open in 1983 and I had a wild card. I was the underdog and I played well,” she said.
After scoring a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Nideffer in the first round at Roland Garros in their first encounter, Herreman-Bagby won their next two meetings, however Nideffer came back to win their final three head-to-head matches.
Saturday’s 50s singles final won’t be the first time Nideffer and Herreman-Bagby have played against each other in San Diego County. In 1987 they squared off at a WTA event at the nearby San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club and then in 1993 they met once again at the WTA tournament at the La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Here is a recap of the six head-to-head WTA meetings between Nideffer and Herreman-Bagby:
