TOP SEED KEEGAN SMITH ADVANCES TO THIRD ROUND
AT USTA NATIONAL OPEN HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS Wednesday’s Matches to Begin at 9 a.m. (PDT) at Balboa Tennis Club San Diego, Calif. – (May 30, 2017) – Top-seeded Keegan Smith of San Diego (Point Loma) began his quest for the men’s singles titles at the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships on a successful note as he dispatched fellow San Diegan Tristen Shaw 6-2, 6-1 in second round action on a cool, overcast morning at the Balboa Tennis Club.
The 18-year-old Smith, who will begin playing collegiate tennis for UCLA later this fall, advances to the third round, where he will face unseeded Alexander Rushin of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (PDT).
“There are a lot of good players in the draw. I wasn’t expecting to get the No. 1 seed. I’m excited and trying to get matches to get ready for college and improve my game,” Smith said. “I need match play and that will help me the most before I head off to UCLA. I love tennis and I love playing. It’s just awesome coming out here.”
Second-seeded Stefan Menichella, last year’ singles finalist, cruised into the third round with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jadon Clifton of Gilbert, Ariz. The 22-year-old Menichella recently completed his senior year at Pepperdine University where he played four seasons of collegiate tennis.
Two-time defending singles champion Emanuel Mensah of San Diego (Imperial Beach) also advanced to the third round as he eased past Spencer Hing of Phoenix 6-2, 6-1. Mensah is seeded fourth in this year’s tournament.
Defending women’s singles champion Jessica Failla of Ramona, Calif., who received a first-round bye, will play her opening singles match against Summer Dvorak of Laguna Beach, Calif., on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (PDT). Failla is the top seed in the women’s draw.
Monica Robinson of Valley Center, Calif., the women’s second seed, moved into the third round as she defeated Cydnee Wilkinson of Washington, Utah, 6-0, 6-1. Robinson, who won the tournament singles title in 2014, will take on unseeded Alexandra Kuo of La Jolla on Thursday at 4 p.m. (PDT).
