FAILLA TO FACE ROBINSON IN WOMEN’S SINGLES FINAL
AT USTA NATIONAL OPEN HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Keegan Smith Advances to Men’s Singles Final against Ryan Seggerman
San Diego, Calif. – (June 3, 2017) – Following a thrilling day of semifinal action at the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships, the pairings for Sunday’s men’s and women’s singles finals are set at the Balboa Tennis Club.
The women’s singles final, which begins at 11 a.m. (PDT), will pit top-seed and defending champion Jessica Failla of Ramona, Calif., against second-seeded Monica Robinson of Valley Center, Calif.
The men’s singles final, which is scheduled to start at noon (PDT), will feature top-seeded Keegan Smith of San Diego (Point Loma) against fifth-seeded Ryan Seggerman of Coronado, Calif. Smith, who has not lost a set this week, eliminated eighth-seeded Brandon Nakashima of San Diego 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals, while Seggerman outlasted fellow Coronado resident, Billy Rowe 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Robinson, a recent graduate from the University of Notre Dame where she played collegiate tennis for four years, will be looking to win the tournament for the second time after capturing the women’s singles title in 2014. The 22-year-old, who played No. 1 in singles and doubles for the Fighting Irish, has been simply dominant in this week’s national tournament, having dropped only seven games in four matches to reach Sunday’s final.
On Saturday morning, she overpowered fifth-seeded Jennifer Kerr of Carlsbad 6-0, 6-2 in 55 minutes in her semifinal match. Kerr won the CIF San Diego Section Girl’s singles title in 2015 and 2016. “She’s a really steady player. I really wanted to be the aggressive one. I was looking to step in on the returns,” Robinson said. “I’m motivated to get back into the finals and hopefully win it.
Robinson will face Failla, her friend and practice partner, who needed one-hour and 38 minutes to dismiss third-seeded Dominique Schaefer of Newbury Park, Calif., 6-1, 7-6 (2) in the semifinals. “It’s going to be fun because we’re also doubles partners. It’s going to be an interesting, respectable match because we both respect each other very much,” Robinson said.
