Tuesday’s Matches Scheduled to Begin at 8 a.m. at Barnes Tennis Center
SAN DIEGO – (August 7, 2017) – Top-seed Usue Arconada of Rio Piedras, P.R., and second-seeded Claire Liu of Thousand Oaks, Calif., scored impressive wins in their opening singles matches to advance to the third round of the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Arconada, who received a first-round bye, overpowered unseeded Alexandra Vesikallio of Bay Village, Ohio, 6-0, 6-1. She will play 33rd seed Julia Lilien of Newport Beach, Calif., in Tuesday’s third-round.
Liu, who also received a first-round bye, defeated Kathy Wang of San Diego 6-0, 6-0 on Stadium Court in one-hour and five-minutes. Liu, the reigning Wimbledon Girls’ singles champion, will take on 33rd seed Sonia Tartakovsky of New York in her third-round match.
“It’s was a good match for me. (First) rounds are always tough, but I think I handled my nerves well,” Liu said after her victory. “I played the way I wanted to, so that was good. I was just trying to be aggressive and get to the net as much as possible. I did that pretty well.”
When asked about her expectations coming into San Diego as the second seed in the Girls’ 18s singles draw, Liu responded, “I don’t have any expectations. The only goal for me is to try and get better. If I do that, win or lose, I’ll be happy.”
Fifth-seeded Ashley Lahey of Hawthorne, Calif., fought off the loss of the first set in an entertaining second round match on Stadium Court and rebounded to eliminate Peyton Stearns of Mason, Ohio, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 26 minutes. Lahey will play 33rd seeded Katherine Nguyen of Fountain Valley, Calif., in the third round.
Top-seeded Fiona Crawley of San Antonio advanced to the fourth-round in the Girls’ 16s singles draw with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over 33rd seeded Anna Campana of Hillsborough, Calif. Crawley will face 33rd seed Yolanda Lin of Sammamish, Wash., in her next match.
