TOP MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SEEDS ADVANCE AT
USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wednesday’s Matches to Begin at 8 a.m. at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
La Jolla, Calif. – (November 28, 2017) – Defending women’s singles champion and top-seed Hiromi Sasano of La Mesa, Calif., overcame early-match nerves and a slow start to advance to the quarterfinals of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Sasano, who received a first-round bye, cruised past unseeded Kelly Meyers of Barrington, Ill., 6-2, 6-0 in 58 minutes in a second-round match on Court No. 1. In the first set, Meyers broke serve in the fourth game to tie the score at 2-2, but Sasano dominated the rest of the match as she captured 10 straight games and won 20 of the last 23 points in the second set to seal the victory.
“The first match is always tough mentally. I was a little nervous in the beginning. I’m expected to win. I’m just going to go one match at a time,” said Sasano, who is 5 ½ month pregnant and expecting a baby girl. “This tournament is always my favorite tournament. I’ll do my best to make it (to the final). I want to tell my daughter that I played this tournament while I was pregnant.”
On Wednesday, Sasano will have a tough test in the quarterfinals as she faces fifth-seeded Fanny Gamble of San Rafael, Calif., at noon. In the bottom half of the women’s draw, second-seeded Dina McBride of Valencia, Calif., eliminated unseeded Christine Anzai of San Diego 6-2, 6-0 to move into the quarterfinals where she will meet fifth-seeded Marlo Carruth of Studio City, Calif.
In the men’s singles draw, top-seeded David McNamara of Delray Beach, Fla., advanced to the third round as the 41-year-old former touring tennis professional defeated unseeded Christopher Criblez of Laguna Hills, Calif., 6-3, 6-1. McNamara will take on Omar Morgades of Los Angeles in his next match at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Defending men’s singles champion Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif., also advanced to the third round as he eased past unseeded Ryan Byrd of Las Cruces, N.M., 6-1, 6-2. Greenwald, who is seeded third, will play ninth-seeded Michael Chang of Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
