Nalbandian Falls in London final after hurting Line Judge

Marin Cilic

David Nalbandian was defaulted in the Queen’s Club final on Sunday, when he injured a line judge after kicking a small barrier surrounding the judge. A piece of the barrier hit the line judge in the shin and caused bleeding. Marin Cilic was awarded the match and the title on Sunday despite trailing the Argentine 6-7, 4-3.

Nalbandian said that he should not have been disqualified. “Sometimes you get very frustrated on court and it’s tough to control that, and sometimes I do a mistake. So it’s very tough to end a final like that. But sometimes we feel so much pressure from the ATP to play a lot of tournaments. They don’t do anything (for) us, and today I do a mistake and I have to pay like that.

“I agree I do a mistake but sometimes everybody do a mistake and I didn’t feel it had to end like that, especially in a final.”

“It’s an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, the spectators, the tournament, the sponsors, the players and the linesman,” said ATP executive chairman and president Brad Drewett in a statement. “David certainly did not mean for this to happen, however the rules are very clear in a situation like this and causing injury to someone is an automatic default for any player.”

“It’s definitely not the way I wanted to win it,” Cilic said. “The match was still open but I can’t change it. I’m sorry for the (spectators) that it had to end like this.

“We had some good rallies, and it’s hard to see the final end like this,” Clic said.

“I played well today and came here to play four, five matches. I won them pretty comfortably in those first two or three. I’m feeling really good and I think my form is on the spot where it should be.

“I think that the beginning of the second set was really good from my side; to break him and to keep a few holds to get to the later stages of the second set. I think I played the right way. The tennis was really good today. He was making really, really good returns and putting me under pressure a lot of times.”

“There is a lot of rules, and sometimes they (ATP officials) don’t do anything. The rule book is very big and I can tell you that the ATP do a lot of mistakes to the players and nothing happens,” Nalbandian said.

Tsonga Beaten in London, Injured Finger Could put Wimbledon in Doubt

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s Wimbledon is in question after falling to Ivan Dodig 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5) in a third-round loss to Ivan Dodig at Queen’s Club on Thursday.

Tsonga injured the little finger on his right hand when he slipped and fell on the court during the sixth game of the third set.

“I think it’s serious,” Tsonga said. “I just fell down. That’s it. I didn’t do, you know, an exam for the moment, but it sounds very bad. I felt like I broke something or I stretched, you know, a lot of ligaments, I would say.”

Seeds Including Murray and Roddick Crash Out in London

Nine seeds crashed out of the Queen’s Club tournament on Monday including top seed Andy Murray and four-time champion Andy Roddick. Two-time champion Murray fell to Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(1).
“It was a very close match… losing serve at the beginning of the third set after breaking him was probably not great,” Murray said. “Got him back into the match. He’s a very good grass court player. He’s been in the final here. He’s beaten Nadal and a point away from winning the tournament.

“I was hitting the ball fine today. It wasn’t like I was shanking balls and mishitting. I just need to spend more time on the grass.”

“My best win before was [Rafael] Nadal here on the same court, centre court, so it’s a lucky court for me,” said Mahut. “Rafa was a very good performance, but today beating Andy Murray here in Queen’s, it’s very special, but it’s only second round.”

Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin knocked out Rodick, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

“I thought I had a look there in the third set, and honestly I felt like I was going to take that thing once I turned it, ” Roddick said. “Didn’t work out that way.” “The guy played great. I didn’t hit the ball too badly. I’ve certainly played a lot worse this year so far.”
“If Andy lost today, it’s not because he was not good, it was maybe also because Nicolas was unbelievable,”  said Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, one of few seeds to advance today. “Everybody knows he’s able to play fantastic tennis on grass, and he did it today. He played already a final here. He had some match points here, like me last year. On grass he’s maybe one of the best players in the world.”

Murray, Bryan Brothers Win Titles at Queen’s Club

Andy Murray of Britain holds The Queen’s Cup trophy after winning his singles final match against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga of France at the Queen’s Club Championships in west London June 13, 2011. REUTERS/Toby Melville (BRITAIN – Tags: SPORT TENNIS)

The rain may have delayed both finals at the AEGON Championships until Monday, it provided two exciting matches for fans able to attend. Fans queued up as early as 2 a.m. to get access to 1000 available tickets to see the third Monday final at Queen’s Club in the Open Era. Andy Murray took home the trophy in singles with a three-set win over Jo-Wilfred Tsonga while a match tiebreak produced a winning outcome for the Bryan Brothers.

Murray became the first British player to capture multiple titles at The Queen’s Club. “I’m going to Wimbledon with the feeling that I’m going to win the tournament, said Murray. “I don’t think you can go in with any other attitude. I feel like I’m playing good tennis. I’ll need to improve the next week or so and work on some things going into Wimbledon.

“It’s been one of the most fun weeks for me because the tennis, the last two matches was very good. It was relaxing. I said everyone thinks at this period of the year it’s so stressful, you can’t play, you can’t enjoy yourself, you can’t do anything. But I felt like I expressed myself on the court. I felt like I was hitting the ball really good. I enjoyed it.”

Losing finalist Tsonga summed up the week,”I’m disappointed to lose a final. It’s difficult when you get this far and miss the last step,” said Tsonga. “But I feel good with my game. He played well. I was aggressive but he was really strong today. He can read the serve really well, which makes it very difficult.

“For me anyway it was a good week. I haven’t played at such a high level for a long time, so I’m excited about playing Wimbledon because I’m playing well now.”

The Bryan brothers took home their fourth Queens Club title but it was far from easy,”It was a hard fought match against a great team,” said Bob Bryan. “You have to play against your best against the Indians. These two guys are legends and one of the greatest teams of all time.

“We scraped and clawed back from a pretty deep hole in the second set. I think Mike hit a topspin lob that got up back in the second set. In the breakers you always roll the dice. We’re very excited and this is a great lead-up to Wimbledon.”

Mike Bryan commented on the great day of tennis including the enthusiastic audience, “I thought the crowd was fantastic. There was a lot of energy. The crowd was happy to be there. It was a great day of tennis. Towards the end of the match we could feel the energy.

“We always play great tennis against those guys (Bhupathi and Paes). As Bob says they are legends of doubles and you always have to play your best tennis. It was a high quality doubles match all round.”
