Gulbis Stops Haas; Roger-Vasselin Knocks Out Isner in Delray Beach

ErnestsGulbisbyCurtJanka

(March 2, 2013) Edouard Roger-Vasselin upset top-seeded John Isner 6-4, 4-6, 6-4  while Ernests Gulbis ended Tommy Haas’ hopes  6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2) in the semifinals of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Saturday.

Roger-Vasselin was playing in his first career ATP World Tour semifinal against the No. 15 Isner.  Roger-Vasselin’s father, Christophe, was a French Open semifinalist in 1983 and ranked as high as No. 39.

2010 Delray Beach Champion Gulbis is the fifth ever qualifier to reach the Delray Beach finals.

“It is the first outdoor tournament after the indoor season,” Gulbis told media. “Qualifiers have one small advantage as they’ve played already three matches while the main draw guys haven’t played a match yet.

“That’s why there’s a lot of upsets here.”

Roger-Vasselin is looking to become this year’s third first-time winner on the ATP Tour.

Anderson Wins Delray Beach International Tennis Championships

South African Kevin Anderson captured his second title on the ATP World Tour, when he defeated 173rd ranked Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 7-6(2) for the Delray Beach crown.

“It feels fantastic. It’s my first one in the United States,” Anderson said, “which is great. I feel apart from South Africa, this is my new home. My wife Kelsey was here for the weekend… This is a very important tournament for me. I feel it’s good preparation going to Indian wells and Miami and playing outside.

“Both of us were a little nervous at the start of match, so I had to find my rhythm. I think at the end, I felt I was mentally composed throughout [the tournament]. I didn’t let any patches of bad tennis affect my mindset [this week].”

The Australian Matosevic had a career week reaching his first ATP World Tour final as a qualifier.

“I’ve been training really hard,” said the Austrlaian. “People have been telling me hard work pays off, and I guess in some small way, a little bit paid off this week. Before the week, if you told me that I’d make the final, I’d be the happiest guy in the world. Then when you get there and you play the match, I feel like I was just a few points from winning the match or turning the match, but I just couldn’t do it. It can only help me I guess.

“My energy levels were pretty low. I just couldn’t serve well today, but credit to Kevin. He was the better player today.”

Singles – Final
[7] K Anderson (RSA) d [Q] M Matosevic (AUS) 64 76(2)

Doubles – Final
[3] C Fleming (GBR) / R Hutchins (GBR) d M Mertinak (SVK) / A Sa (BRA) 26 76(5) 15-13 – Saved 1 M.P.

Roddick Falls After Having Match Points; Isner Breezes Past Tomic in Delray Beach

Andy Roddick Photo by Beth Wilson for Tennis Panorama News

Andy Roddick  held three match points but could not close out 6-foot-8 South African Kevin Anderson, who rallied to upset the fourth-seed, 2-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4 on Friday night in the Delray Beach Tennis Championships.

“I played well enough to win. I didn’t serve well enough to win,” said Roddick, “I’ve made a career of putting a first serve in there and I didn’t.”

Anderson will match up in Saturday’s semifinal against another tower of a man Instead 6-foot-10 John Isner.

Isner blew past both the swirling winds and Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Friday. The 56-minute match saw the American knock nine aces past the Australian teen.

“I played well right from the get-go,” Isner said. “When he has time, that’s when he gets comfortable. So I wanted to keep the points short, which is what I want to do every match.

“The wind was very, very tricky.”

Roddick Reaches Delray Beach Quarterfinals

Andy Roddick avenged his loss to Denis Istomin in San Jose by defeating the Uzbek 6-4, 7-5 at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championship on Thursday.

“I’m feeling better than I did a couple of matches ago,” Roddick said. “I served horrendously and still won and was still able to break serve.”

“I got it done in the end. You want to close. The misses I had were positive misses because they were played on my terms. That was a big step.”

Roddick will play  Kevin Anderson of South Africa in Friday’s quarterfinals.
