Andy Murray, David Ferrer Upset in Doha, Rafael Nadal advances in Three Sets

Andy Murray

Andy Murray

(January 1, 2014) Two out of the top three seeds fell in Doha on Wednesday at the Qatar Open. No. 3 seed Andy Murray led Florian Mayer only to fall in three sets while second seed David Ferrer fell in straight sets to Daniel Brands, 6-4, 7-5.

Top seed Rafael Nadal avoided the upset as he was pushed by Tobias Kamke 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3.

Andy Murray led Mayer 6-3, 3-0 when the German picked up his game going for shots. Mayer captured twelve out of the last 15 games to take the win. The tale of the tape shows that Murray hit 25 winners and 37 errors.

“To be honest, in my mind, the match was finished at 3-6, 0-3,” Mayer told media. “I tried to play more aggressively, tried to risk something more. Of course for sure he didn’t play his best tennis.

“I knew before the match if I would have a chance, it’s probably today. He didn’t play for a long time. I took my chance.”

For Mayer it’s the second win over a top ten player, the first coming against David Ferrer in Shanghai last year.

“I felt like I slowed down in the second set, service speed and movement,” Murray told media. “It wasn’t a particular area that was sore. Just more joints rather than muscles, just a bit sore from changing direction and playing at that level.

“But I was playing well. I played some good tennis today. I moved well at the beginning of the match, so that was a positive, and I did say the only way to feel better is by playing matches. So today was a start.”

This was just Murray’s second singles match back feom a back injury which had sidelined him since September.

Azarenka who will be replaced for Williams as the top player on Monday defended her Doha title from last year for her 16th WTA title

“I played really well this entire week, Azarenka said. It’s never easy to play five matches every day with the best players in the world – but I’m glad I was really consistent this week and achieved my goal.”

Azarenka snapped a nine–match losing streak to Williams.

“I always respect Victoria,” Williams said. I think she’s a really good player. Obviously she’s so consistent and she plays well. She’s such a solid player. It’s nice to always play someone and go home and you’re like, ‘Okay, I didn’t do great, but let me work harder.’ I think that she inspires a lot of people to work harder, and definitely me.”

Williams ascends to World No.1 on Monday for the 6th time to be come at 31, the oldest ever WTA player to hold the top spot.

Williams Stops Sharapova and Will Face Azarenka in Doha Final

2013 Australian Open - Day 8

(February 16, 2013) A day after moving up to world No. 1 Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to reach the Qatar Open final. Williams extended her winning streak against the Russian to 10 straight. The American is 11-2 versus Sharapova.

“Maria is always playing really well and so consistent, but I’m trying to be consistent as well,” Williams said to the WTA website. “I love it here in Doha. I’ve never played this particular tournament but I’ve played in Doha before and had some good results, and I hope to have a good result in the final tomorrow, too.”

Williams will face Victoria Azarenka in the Doha final. Azarenka had no problems with Agnieszka Radwanska  stopping her 6-3, 6-3.

“I think it was a really high performance match from both of us,” Azarenka said to the WTA websaite. “It was a little bit shaky in the beginning – I think I did a little bit too many unforced errors and rushed a little bit into the rallies, but I started to be patient and more aggressive and dominant, really going for my shots when there was an opportunity, and taking advantage of every short ball she gave me. I’m glad I could turn it around.”

Williams holds a career 11-1 record versus Azarenka.

Serena Williams Moves Back to No. 1 After Win Over Kvitova

SerenaWilliamsFaceoff6

(February 15, 2013) Serena Williams returned to No. 1 ranking by virtue of her 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 quarterfinal win over Petra Kvitova in Doha at the Qatar Open. The win makes Williams the oldest WTA No. 1 ever at 31 years four months old when the rankings come out on Monday. Chris Evert held that record previously back in 1985, short of her 31st birthday. Williams was last at world No. 1 in October 2010. She first became No. 1 at 20 years old on July 8, 2002.

Williams had to come back from 1-4 down in the third set. “I just hung in there and she was playing so good,” said Williams on court after the win. “Every time I looked around she was hitting a winner and I thought if I could just stay in there. I could hear the crowd cheering for me, and I don’t get that all the time, so that was nice.”

“I’ve been through so much and I just never thought I’d be here,” said a teary-eyed Williams. “I’m so sensitive nowadays.”

“I’m always crying, but I never thought I would be here again. I’ve been through so much and I just never thought I’d be here, so thank you Jehovah for giving me another chance.”

“This is another amazing accomplishment for a superstar champion who has played an integral role, over the past 15 years, in solidifying tennis as the global leader in women’s sports,” said Stacey Allaster, WTA Chairman & CEO through a news release. “As we celebrate 40 years of the WTA this season, it seems fitting to have Serena, one of the sport’s all-time greats and global icons, return to the World No.1 ranking.”

Williams will face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals on Saturday after the Russian defeated Australian Sam Stosur 6-2 6-4. Current No. 1 Victoria Azarenka also advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sara Errani.

Williams sent out a message to her twitter followers after the match:

Azarenka smiles

(February 13, 2013) No. 1 Victoria Azarenka is through to the third round of Doha by virtue of a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Romina Oprandi on Wednesday.

Also advancing were defending champion No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki. American teenager Sloane Stephens fell to Klara Zakopalova 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).

“Today was a tough match,” Stephens said of the hot and windy conditions. “The conditions were tough but Klara played well. Now I just need to regroup and keep working on my game and get ready for Dubai.”

Stephens missed playing for the US Fed Cup against Italy last week due to an  abdominal muscle injury.

Should Serena Williams reach the semifinals, she’ll move up to No.1. Azarenka can only hold on to No.1 if she makes the final and Williams loses in the semifinals.

Serena Williams, Sharapova Advance Easily in Doha

SerenaWilliamsFaceoff5 - Copy

(February 12, 2013) Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova moved on in Doha with routine victories on Tuesday.

Sharapova extended her winning streak to 10 in Doha stopping French qualifier Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2. Sharapova  has never lost in Doha having won teh tournament in 2005 and 2008.

“I was quite happy with the way I played, because my opponent has already played a few matches here so she’s been able to get in that match atmosphere,” Sharapova said to media. “I had a tough match against her in my previous encounter where I played three sets. I really wanted to start better this time as opposed to last time.”

Williams, who will rise to No. 1 should she reach the semifinals showed no signs of an ankle injury or back injury in her 6-2, 6-1 demolition of Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova.

“I have it heavily taped. As long as the tape doesn’t get loose, it feels really good,” Williams told media.  “Physically feeling better is so good, and hopefully I can stay on that level.”
