Peng Shuai to Become No. 1 in Women’s Doubles Next Week

(February 13, 2014) Peng Shuai will become the No.1 in doubles next week on the WTA tour. She will be the first Chinese tennis player ever to rise to No.1 in either singles or doubles, male or female. She will become the second Asia woman to hold a No. 1 ranking as second Asian woman – Japan’s Ai Sugiyama also reached No.1 in doubles.

She and partner Hsieh Su-Wei opened the Qatar open with a win over Irina Buryachok and Vitalia Diatchenko, 6-2, 6-4.

Li Na Ousted by Qualifier in Doha

(February 13, 2014) Reigning Australian Open champion Li Na fell victim to Czech qualifier Petra Cetkovska 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Qatar Open on Thursday.

Cetkovska, no stranger to upsetting top ten players completed the feat for the eighth time, second time ousting a top three players. She beat a then ranked No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the 2011 Rome

Li could not hold on to a 3-1 lead in the third set in the 2 hour and 46-minute match.

Even with the loss, Li will move up to No. 2 in the world when the rankings come out next week.

Venus Wins, Stephens Falls in Doha

(February 10, 2014) Venus Williams returned to the court for the first time since losing in the first round of the Australian Open, while countrywoman Sloane Stephens fell in Doha on Monday.

Williams bested qualifier Petra Martic 6-2, 6-2 to set up a second-round match with former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

No. 2 American Stephens could not find any consistency and lost to qualifier Petra Cetkovska 7-5-6-1.
