DavidFerrer BNP Paribas Players Party

(January 3, 2013) David Ferrer lead the charge into the Qatar Open semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 rout over Paolo Lorenzi. “In the second set, I played more aggressive with my game, Ferrer said. It’s never easy to play [well] the first week of the season.”

Ferree will meet Nikolay Davydenko in the semis. He dismantled Simone Bolelli 6-1, 6-1 in 50 minutes..

Richard Gasquet  also advanced to the semifinals defeating Lukas Lacko 6-1, 6-3.

“I returned better and served better than yesterday. It’s a good match for me,” said the Frenchman. “I’m happy. I feel more confident than yesterday. It’s a good win for me.”

Gasquet’s countryman Gael Monfils comeback from a knee injury was stalled after falling to the 153rd ranked German qualifier Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-5.

“He went for his shots more than me” Monfils said. “He was playing very fast at the beginning, and it took me a while to adapt and to just to see how he was playing.”

“It was tougher because I felt a bit heavier, and it was my first tough match yesterday. I struggled a bit with my recovery. I have to get used to, and, you know, just adjust a couple of stuff to be better.”

For Brands, he’s aiming to become a top 100 player. “If I have confidence and I feel good, then I can play like today,” Brands said.
“I had three matches in the qualies, which were also not so easy. If you win the matches, you get confidence. That’s very important for me. I can’t believe it right now. If I have confidence and I feel good, then I can play like today. I hope I can keep on playing like this in my next match tomorrow and let’s see what happens.”

Tsonga Wins All-French Final in Doha

Third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the Qatar Open title Saturday, by defeating his fellow countryman Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-3 in the first ever all-French final in Doha.

“At the beginning of the match, it was a bit difficult because he broke me very early,” said Tsonga. It was tough. But in my head, everything was right. I said, ‘Okay, I’m one break down, but I will continue to play my game. I will make him run a lot.’ So I hit a lot of shots to make him run. I think it was the good solution because then, after that, he was maybe a bit tired. After that, I was better than him. That’s why maybe I won today.”

“It’s really good for me because I played a lot of matches [this week]. I will leave this tournament with a lot of confidence, and it’s good for me for the next tournament, which will be Melbourne.”

“I think I had some opportunities in the first set, and I was maybe a bit less aggressive tonight to finish this first set. And then I think he played better and better,” said Monfils.

“I think the conditions were a bit tough, but it was for both of us. Today I was maybe less powerful than I was during this week, because I think Jo also played different. He was playing a bit soft and then changed the rhythm, [hitting] a bit hard and mixing it up with some slice.”
Tsonga became the third Frenchman to lift the Doha trophy after Nicolas Escude in 2004 and Fabrice Santoro in 2000.

Monfils Topples Nadal, Faces Friend Tsonga in Qatar Final

A determined Gael Monfils upset world No. 2 Rafal Nadal 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the final of the Qatar Open.

“I just played my game, the Frenchman said. “I think last night (against Viktor Troicki) I played a good match and felt very good about it. I knew today if I did it in same spirit against Rafa it would be great because you need to take advantage of every shot you can make. So I just focused on my game and be aggressive. Then today everything worked.”

Monfils captured the the final five games of the match, rallying from 1-4 down, “It was just a break, so I was just trying to adjust the way I played,” Monfils said. “I was just thinking it’s one break and I know I can break him.”

Nadal said to media, “I didn’t play the right way tactically in the first set, in my opinion. I wanted to play more aggressive than usual, playing more inside, don’t wait. So to play against him, I know that I cannot play like I did in the first set. I need to wait a little more. I need to play a little bit, you know, slower and wait my chance.”

“I go to Australia very happy about what I did here. For sure I would love to win the tournament, win today, have another match tomorrow. I am not lying to you, and my feeling is very positive… So seriously, the only negative thing of today is to lose. For the rest of the things, I am satisfied.

“I may not win in Australia but I have to keep working like this and I’m going the right way to win in the future.”

In the final Monfils will play fellow Frenchman and friend Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who advanced to the final when Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament with a back injury.

“It’s really always tough to play against Jo because he have a powerful game and kind of game, you know, it’s tough to manipulate him from the baseline,” said Monfils. “I need just to focus also on my game and focus on my mind.”

Federer Bows Out of Doha with Back Injury

Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Qatar Open with a back injury.

“I hurt my back in my second round match against Zemlja and just got a little bit better for the match against Seppi,” said Federer.

“I don’t feel a whole lot of improvement for today, and I just don’t think it’s the right time to risk anything more right now. I still have pain, and that’s why it was the only right decision, a difficult one for me … so it’s a sad moment for me and for the tournament and for the fans, but health goes first.”

“For Australia, I’m optimistic, just because it’s not very good but it isn’t crazy bad.  I have had bad backs in the past. This is definitely not very good; otherwise I would be playing. But I feel without play and the right treatment, I will get through it in the next few days.”

The withdrawal move Jo-Wilfried Tsonga into the Qatar Open final.

This marks only the second time that Federer has withdrawn from a match, the last time coming in 2008 at the BNP Paribas Masters in Bercy.

Nadal, Federer, Tsonga and Monfils Move into Doha Semis

On Thursday at the Qatar Open the top four seeds make their way to the semifinals.

Top seed Nadal played with confidence in a 6-4, 6-4 dismissal of Mikhail Youzhny.
“I think I played really well. The end of the match was a little bit nervy but the rest of it was good,” said Nadal. “I’m feeling a little better each day and I’m enjoying the tournament and being in Qatar.”

Defending Doha champion Roger Federer was shaky in a three-set win over Andreas Seppi 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The victory extends the Swiss’ streak to 20 in a row since he lost his US Open semifinal match to eventual champion Novak Djokovic..

“I thought I started well. I was able to play aggressive, not giving too much rhythm. He was obviously missing more shots due to that,” said Federer to media “I thought he (Seppi) was a better player in that second set and deserved that set, and then the third set was close.”

The win sets up another Federer – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga clash. “It’s (always) a pleasure and an honor to play against this guy,” said Tsonga. “When you beat him, you know you can do it and that’s it. So of course when you are going on the court the next time, you are a bit more confident. The two met on three consecutive Sundays near the end the season.

Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer sailed to easy wins on Wednesday at the Qatar Open in Doha.

Nadal downed German qualifier Denis Gremelmayr 6-2 6-2 while Federer routed Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja 6-2 6-3

“I think I hit good forehands,” said Nadal of his play. “I went to the net a lot of times, that’s important. It’s something we are trying to do more often.

“I’m trying to return a little bit better, because for me the worst thing that I did last year was the return, especially the second half of the year. My return was worse than usual.”

Federer’s win extends his winning streak to 19.

“I’m happy to come through matches easily at the beginning of the season, because it can be tricky when you enter the first tournament and right away you play an incredibly tough three setter,” told reporters.

Nadal Staves Off Kohlschreiber, Federer Routines Davydenko in Doha

Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were taken to three sets while Roger Federer sailed in first round matches in Doha on Tuesday.

World No. 2 Nadal had to overcome a break in the third set to stop Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.

“In general, for me, (this) was a really positive match,” Nadal told media. “I think I played a very good first set. The only moment that I didn’t play well was the beginning of the second and after the tiebreak. For the rest, I think I played a very solid match.”

In a rematch of last year’s Doha final, No. 3 Federer dismissed Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-2.

“It was a good first match for me into the new season and I think it was a combination between me playing actually really well and Nikolay just not finding his range, you know, what we’re used to seeing from him in the past,” said the Swiss. “But I take these victories any time, especially against a top player like him.”

World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eked out a win against Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-1.

Tsonga said, “It was good for me to play a long time, to stay a long time on the court. But it was not easy, not easy today. Malek was in good shape. With the wind, it was really difficult to play my best tennis.”
