Gasquet and Halep take Moscow Titles

Richard Gasquet

(October 20, 2013) No. 1 seed Richard Gasquet captured his 10 career title surviving qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Kremlin Cup. For the Frenchman it’s his third title of 2013.

World No. 18. Simona Halep won her the fifth title of this year and her career by upsetting  Samantha Stosur 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the women’s final in Moscow.

“It’s an incredible year for me and I enjoy every moment of it,” said Halep whose ranking is expected to rise to a career-high No. 15.

“It was nice, all the people who were supporting me, and supporting us – I want to thank them for all of their support. Maybe Sam was tired because she won in Osaka last week, and after Asia I had about 10 days of break because I had a right shoulder injury. But I recovered well from that, and now I feel good, and my game was very good this week. Maybe I was just a little bit fresher today.”

With Gasquet’s win he has moved to the ninth position in the ATP Race to the London, the ATP World Tour Finals. The top 8 players will play in the ATP year-ender. The 27-year-old Frenchman is btrying to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time since 2007.

“I’ll try my best to qualify,” Gasquet said. “Two big tournaments are coming up, including [the ATP World Tour Masters 1000] in Paris. I’ll try my best. I was close to losing today. But I fought a lot. It’s important for me to qualify for it. But the title here is important for me because my opponent played very well.

“He won a lot matches recently and won Challengers. He won seven matches here. He won against big players. For sure, I knew it would be tough because his shots are flat and very strong and he doesn’t miss much and serves well. I knew it would be a big fight for me if I wanted to win. It is a big win for me to win in three sets.”

Wozniacki and Seppi Claim Moscow Titles

(October 20, 2012) Caroline Wozniacki won her 20th career title Sunday, while Andreas Seppi won his third in Moscow on Sunday.

No. 11 Wozniacki defeated Samantha Stosur 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 while Seppi  rallied past Thomaz Bellucci 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3  for the Kremlin Cup.

“I think both of us played very good tennis out there,” Wozniacki said after coming back from a break down in the final set.

“At the right times I managed to win the right points. I tried to stay aggressive and stay close to the line and just dictate. But she played well and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”

“Sam has been playing well and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and it could have gone either way at the end, but I think at the right times I played the right shots. There were a lot of key moments, but they just went my way.”

“Even though I lost, making a final is still a good achievement, “Stosur said.” It’s disappointing not to walk away with a title this year, having done so the last couple of years, but I made it to two finals and had a lot of other good opportunities, so it’s still a good year, and I’ll use it to motivate myself in 2013.”

Seppi came back to win down a set and a break against the hard-serving Bellucci, despite the Brazilian hitting 13 aces against the Italian.

“It was tough today to come back from a set and a break down, said Seppi. “He was serving very well at the beginning. I kept trying and that put some pressure on him. He could not close it out when he served for the match twice and that gave me confidence. I started to play more relaxed and more aggressive.”

Bellucci served for the match twice in the second set at 5-4 and 6-5 but failed to close the match.

“I just did not play at the same level as I was before when I served for the match,” Bellucci. “Maybe I got too nervous. It was still a good effort from me this week, my first indoor final. It was a good match and he played well.”

“It is very special to win this title as I remember Yevgeny (Kafelnikov) winning so many times here and he was my idol growing up, Said Seppi.”I saw him a few times this week but I was too shy to ask him anything. It has been a great season for me. Winning titles is so special. Now I have won on all surfaces and that means a lot.”

Petrova, Davydenko Stopped in Moscow

Nikolay Davydenko

(October 16, 2012) Seeded Russians (6) Nadia Petrova and (5) Nikolay Davydenko fell on Tuesday at Moscow’s Kemlin Cup on Tuesday. Petrova lost to Simona Halep of Romania 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, while Davydenko lost to fellow Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. 7-5, 6-4.

“Today, I won the first set and was leading 4-0 in the second, but Nikolay didn’t want to give up. I was lucky to win in straight sets,” Bogomolov said.

“I’ve made too many mistakes in the match,” Davydenko told media. “But it’s positive that it was not my opponent who forced me to make mistakes – I myself faulted trying to find my game. It’s a pity … I wanted to play a good match but failed.”

Tipsarevic Tops in Moscow

Top seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia won the Kremlin Cup title on Sunday in Moscow with a 6-4, 6-2 over countryman and defending champion Viktor Troicki.

“It was really tough,” said Tipsarevic. “We were both tight. You could cut the tension with a knife. It was like a nightmare to play against your friend. It was not a suprise that we played the final, as we were the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds here. Kuala Lumpur was more emotional because it was my first ATP World Tour title but here I was more nervous as I was playing Viktor.”

“This was the first time we had an All-Serbian final, ATP or WTA,” said Triocki, “so it was a bit strange at the beginning for both of us. Janko deserved to win, as he was the better player today. We both played pretty good but he was more aggressive.”

The win provided precious points towards the 14th ranked Tipsarevic in the quest for qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Tipsarevic noted, “even if I say I don’t want to think about London, I knew it was a big opportunity for me. Every single point counts for London now. It is going to be really hard but not impossible. If I don’t qualify for London, then my next goal would be to finish in the Top 10.”
