Almagro, Radwanska, Schiavone Nab Titles before the French Open Begins

On the eve of Roland Garros Nicolas Almagro, Agnieszka Radwanska and Francesca Schiavone won titles on Saturday.

Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland captured her 10th career title by capturing the Brussels Open defeating Simona Halep of Romania 7-5, 6-0.

“On clay I think I need longer to warm up, not just the five minutes before the match,” said Radwanska.  “At the end I won nine games in a row – it was a good comeback, I think. And it’s always great to win a tournament.”

“I’m happy to get some good preparation in ahead of the French Open.”

It’s Radwanska’s third title of the year.

Nicolas Almagro ended Bryan Baker’s career week by winning his second Nice title defeating the American 6-3, 6-2.

“I played my best tennis in two years here,” the Spaniard said. “I am very happy with my serve and my forehand. I moved on the court very, very well. Today, was one of those matches you want to keep in your mind for the rest of the season, because I couldn’t have played much better. Today was amazing. I am happy with my form, my tennis and my team. We will aim to keep working hard, so I play, in future, as I did today.

“He(Baker) lost the final today, but he is back, he is playing very good. I think if he plays as he did this week, then he will win many, many tournaments.”

The 216th-ranked Baker’s 15 –match clay win streak was broken, but it was his most successful week as a pro making his first main tour final. Baker who has a wildcard to play the French Open was off the tour for almost six years after five before coming back to tennis last July.

“It was a really tough match, Baker said. He always seems to play pretty well. He didn’t make many unforced errors and I think he seemed to have a high first serve percentage. He wasn’t just trying to get them in, he was going for a lot. I was struggling to return his serve. I didn’t feel like I played that poorly. I was a little sore and a little tired, but he was definitely the better player. I should have changed where I stood in the court [to return serve]. I should have returned further back to give him another look. I did it at the end of the second set and it worked better. It was tough out there and he played really well.

“It was a great week. Every time you go onto court you want to win. I am a competitor, I hate losing. But, when you look at the week as a whole, it has been an unbelievable week. I hoped to qualify at the start of the week and win a match or two, before going to Roland Garros. Obviously, I did much better than that. I think even in the qualifying, I felt as if I was playing pretty well. I won my three matches easily and knew I was playing good tennis.”

Francesca Schiavone captured his first tournament since winning the 2010 French Open when she defeated Alizé Cornet 6-4, 6-4 for the Strasbourg title.

“In this tournament, in the most important moments, I was there,” Schiavone said. “It has been a long time since I’ve felt that. It’s a great feeling and I want to keep going this way. I’m happy again. I’m feeling the sensation of fighting and feeling the pain, and enjoying my game again.”

J Tipsarevic (SRB) / N Zimonjic (SRB) d T Berdych (CZE) / F Cermak (CZE) 63 61 (SRB 3, CZE 0)

Janko Tipsarevic: “We both played very solid. I was a bit lucky at the end of both sets. In the second set, his string broke on a very important point, but I felt I deserved to win. I was the better player today in the crucial moments of the match.”

On winning in Dusseldorf for the second time: “I feel great. First of all because Serbia proved that we have a strong team even without our No. 1 player, Novak [Djokovic]. Viktor and I played great tennis. We didn’t lose one singles match here and this just gives us more confidence for the French Open.”

Viktor Troicki: “I would say that it was not such a great match from both of us. It was more tactical. I knew he was a bit more tired than me. I was using that and at the end I played good. I also want to thank Janko. He won all of his matches and he helped me a lot today with the pressure. I also want to thank Nenad and Miki. It was great.”
