Nishikori Stops Berdych to Gain Japan Open Semis

Kei Nishikori

On Friday in Tokyo Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese player to reach the semifinals of the Japan Open Tennis Championships, stunning No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4.  Last week Nishikori mde the semifinals of Kuala Lumpur. The eighth seed will play Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus on Saturday for a place in the final.

World No. 3 and defending champion Andy Murray is back in the Tokyo semifinals. He took out Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The Scot will battle Canadian Milos Raonic in Saturday’s semifinal. Raonic toughed out a 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(7) win over Janko Tispsarevic in which he saved a match point.

“I think it will be tough. He’s played well this week. Today was a good win for him,” Murray said about the match-up with the Raonic. “When you play a guy with a game like has, it’s always going to be tricky. I’ll try to do what I did in New York. I got a lot of returns in play. Once I was in the point, I was able to dictate a lot of them so I’ll try and do the same tomorrow.”

Japan Open Double for Murray

Andy Murray rallied from a set down to top World No. 2 Rafael Nadal 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to capture the Japan Open title in Tokyo on Sunday. It’s his fourth ATP World Tour title this year. The Scot has won 21 out of his last 22 matches dating back to the Cincinnati tournament.

“(Novak) Djokovic set the bar pretty high with his year and his records so far,” said Murray, “so I’ve got to try and keep up somehow. I’ve played well in the last few months in Cincinnati and then the US Open. I need to carry on that form in Shanghai. I need to keep up the wins and hopefully I’ll get to the No. 3 ranking. It’s not the ultimate goal, but it’s the target I set for the last few tournaments this year.

“I played some great tennis, especially in the third set. I had a couple of chances in the first set and was maybe going for too much, going too close to the lines, but once I got that break the roles reversed a little bit. He started going for a little bit more and I was dictating the points playing high-percentage tennis. For sure in the third set it was some of the best tennis I’ve played against him. I was very consistent, didn’t make too many mistakes and kept a cool head in the important moments.”

Murray lost only four points in the final set.”He played unbelievable,” said Nadal, “he didn’t make any mistakes in the third set. He played very aggressive and made no mistakes. When you are playing someone at that level, the only way is to try and get more free points on serve and for me it was impossible today because his return was very impressive.”

Any Murray was a double winner on Sunday also taking the doubles title in Tokyo partnering with his brother with a straight set win over fourth seeds Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek.

“It just obviously makes it a bit extra special playing with your brother, said Andy Murray. It’s the second time we’ve won and he played great. After the tough singles match earlier where there were a lot of long points, I’m glad he managed to help me out by playing really well because it would have been tough otherwise.”

Brother Jamie Murray: “We started good and got an early break and gained confidence from that. The second set we had a lot of great chances, didn’t quite get it, and then the game we broke we were 0/40 up, they got back to deuce, and we managed to win it. I felt like we were in control most of the match.

“I had good feelings coming into this week. It’s always nice to play with Andy; it’s nice to play with your brother and obviously he’s a fantastic player as well so it’s nice to be on the court with him. We played great in all the matches. In the final we probably played our best match and I feel really happy with the way we played.”

Andy Murray became the first ATP World Tour player in 2011 to capture both the singles and doubles titles
