Final Day at Davis Cup – Victory for the USA

Victory for the US in the Davis Cup

The final day’s play started in slightly cooler conditions in Santiago – although the sun soon broke through.

Andy Roddick performed what is now becoming a familiar feat by clinching victory for the US team, though the match didn’t quite start off as expected. Paul Capdeville served first and the early games were characterised by long rallies.  Roddick broke serve first, in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead, only to see Capdeville break back and then break again, with a volley at the net, after holding his own serve.  He then served out the first set; 6 3 to Chile.

The second was a long, tough set, which was ultimately settled in the USA’s favour in a tie break.  Half way through the set, Capdeville started working the noisy crowd, who served up their first Mexican Wave at 5 all. While the atmosphere was good, the crowd was not always well behaved – choosing to cheer every service fault by the American and often whistling during his service.  This did not stop Andy from playing a strong tie break, sending the Chilean sprawling to take the first mini-break at 2-0 before going on to establish a five point lead and to take the tie break 7-2.

The third set started and finished with service breaks, ending with a double fault by Capdeville.  Set to Roddick, 6-3.

Another early break for Roddick in the fourth set.  At 2-1 an awkward bounce led to a Capdeville error and break point.  Capdeville hit it long for Andy to take a 3 -1 lead. At 4-2 Capdeville set up two break points but Roddick saved them both to go up 5-2.  The first match point came in the next game but the Chilean held on, forcing Roddick to serve the match out and win 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Scenes of celebration followed, as the Americans had clinched the tie.  They lined up for a team photo before John Isner came out to play the ‘dead rubber’.  Although he did not appear to be feeling well, Isner  emerged the winner 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 over Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz, leaving the final score for the tie at 4-1 to the USA.

So it was a rewarding visit for the Netheads, although we were uncharacteristically quiet, rather than stir up the Chilean fans too much.  However, as is the case everywhere we go, we were asked to pose for pictures with the visiting fans, hopefully acting as good ambassadors for the US Davis Cup team.

Davis Cup in Santiago – Day 2

Peter, Eileen and Holly Barnes-Wallis are part of a group called the Netheads – these tennis fans cheer on the United States Davis Cup team. They are blogging about their experiences during the USA-Chile Davis Cup tie this weekend in Santiago.

Day two saw the USA edge in front of Chile with another winning performance by the Bryan twins playing their 20th Davis Cup doubles match. Bob and Mike Bryan were up against Nicolas Massu and Jorge Aguilar, playing for Chile.

The first set was over before the electronic scoreboard started to work.  The Chilean team lost their first service game and were not able to recover the break. Set 6-3 to the USA.

The Bryans made another early break in the second set.  They were pushed in the sixth game but held on for 4-2 and immediately broke again for a 5-2 lead.  The Chileans won their first break in the next game but lost it immediately, following a disputed line call at deuce. Again, 6-3 to the USA.

In the third set, the crowd woke up at 2-2, love-30, with Bob Bryan serving.  With both Bryans at the net, the Chileans took it to love-40.  Bob served an ace; Mike hit a winning volley – but the third set point couldn’t be saved.  Chile moved ahead in the set.  The crowd went wild and Massu and Aguilar copied the Bryans trademark chest bump.  The next  game was full of accidents. At advantage USA, Mike Bryan took a heavy fall but was quickly back on his feet.  After four deuces the Chileans managed to hold for a 4-2 lead.  Serves were then held until the 10th game when the Bryan brothers broke back to make it 5-5 and soon we were in a tie break.  The first point was disputed but Bob’s serve was ruled  in.  The first mini-break came on Aguilar’s serve and the teams changed ends with the USA up 4 2.  Soon the Bryan brothers were able to perform their own chest bump as they took the tie break  and the match 7-4.

So we head into the final day at 2 1 to the USA but both teams still have everything to play for.

A Long, Tough Day at the Stadium

SANTIAGO – The first day of the Davis Cup tie between the USA and Chile has just finished –  even.  It marked the debut for Jim Courier as team captain and the return of Andy Roddick to Davis Cup tennis.

A 5,000-6,000 capacity arena had been built within the much larger confines of the national stadium in Chile.  For most of the day it was about half full, though the crowd thinned out towards the end of the day, but the atmosphere remained electric– it turned out to be a longer day than many anticipated and was played in scorching heat accompanied by the noise of the parrots in the nearby trees.

Andy Roddick was on first, playing Nicolas Massu.  The first set went to the USA, 6-2, with Roddick making two breaks of serve, but an early service break in the second set allowed Massu to draw level.  In the third set, at 3-2, we could hear Roddick driving himself forward “c’mon, c’mon, right now”   It worked and he moved up to 4-2 and went on to take the set. Another break proved enough in the fourth and Andy went on to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Second on court was John Isner, facing Paul Capdeville.  The first two sets both went to Isner on tie breaks and  we Netheads were beginning to think this might be a short day, but as is often the case in Davis Cup ties we were mistaken.  Capdeville fought back in a gruelling contest and took the third and fourth sets, also on tie breaks.  There wasn’t actually a break of serve until the 61st game of the match.  Match to Capdeville as he closed out the final set 6-4.

So, after eight and a half hours’ tennis we’re at one all.

SANTIAGO – March 2, 2011 – We’re Netheads and we’re Brits –so, for us, it’s a long way to go to Chile for just for three days tennis.  So our trip to see the USA play Chile in the Davis Cup has been turned into a small tour of South America!

We started in Rio de Janeiro.  Its landmarks are truly spectacular and the weather was great.

We’re now in Santiago and our first impressions (apart from lengthy delays at the airport) are very positive.  Clear, blue skies, magnificent buildings, and all against a backdrop of the Andes Mountains.  And on top of that, we’re going to see tennis!

We’re meeting up with the other Netheads Thursday Night (I think 13 have made the trip) and Friday we’ll see Andy Roddick’s return to Davis Cup tennis, when he opens the US account with his match against Nicolas Massu.  On paper Roddick must win – but this will not be played on paper – but on clay!  Still, our money is on Roddick. Much more in our Friday entry when the matches begin.
