Isner Rallies Past Lopez in Houston, Becomes US No.1

HOUSTON – American John Isner defeated Spain’s Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Saturday to advance to the final of the U.S. Clay Court Championship at the River Oaks Country Club.

The victory moves Isner’s ranking up to No. 9 in the world as of Monday, making him the top American moving past Mardy Fish who lost earlier in the week.

“Even coming out of college it’s something I never could have imagined,” Isner said in regard to becoming the top-ranked American. “But as I started to improve and play better a little bit, I knew that this could be something that was attainable for me. I’m very thrilled. And now I have my highest ranking ever as well, number nine.  That was my next goal, after I got to ten. Now my newest goal is to get to eight, and then seven, and then six.”

Isner bested Lopez, despite not having his best day. “I was not the better player today, just as I wasn’t yesterday.  But I found a way.  It definitely wasn’t pretty but I found a way to eventually get it done, and I’m proud of that.  It’s fortunate for me that I can get through matches when I’m not feeling my best or playing my best because of my serve.   And I think I’m backing it up with better play.”

Isner is 20-6 for 2012 with victories over No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer.

Isner will face Argentina’s Juan Monaco who stopped the career run of Houston’s own Michael Russell 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Russell had reach the semifinals of a main tour ATP event for the first time. En route to the semifinals he knocked out Mardy Fish and Bryan Harrison.

In doubles action, James Blake and Sam Querrey captured the doubles crown  stopping Treat Conrad Huey and Dominic Inglot 7-6(14), 6-4.

“The week was great,” Blake said, “as I haven’t been in the winners’ circle in a while. It’s a great feeling to get back in it with a good friend like Sam. I hope it’s a stepping stone. I remember when I won my first doubles title, it was a precursor to my first singles title the next weekend. I think it shows I’m starting to play well and getting confidence. I’ll take it anywhere I can get it.”

“It’s always fun to play with a buddy like James,” Querrey said. “We hadn’t won a match before, but once we got one win, we got four. We had a lot of close matches. Hopefully we can play again and win another title.”

Querrey Steps Fowards, Blake Falls Back

By Joe McGovern

HOUSTON – Sam Querrey and James Blake highlighted the inaugural night card in two first round matches at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships. The two men, each a onetime Houston finalists (Querrey in 2010, Blake in 2008), are entered in the doubles draw as a team, though only one advanced in the singles bracket.

Querrey came into Houston carrying an underwhelming 5-7 record in 2012, but he achieved easily his best win of the season with a comprehensive 58-minute win over Frenchman Eric Prodon. Querrey served six aces and sacrificed only seven total points on his serve in the whole match.

Blake faced Carlos Berlocq, the Argentine who he defeated at the same stage here last year, but this time Berlocq came away the victor, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Blake has struggled this year, falling in the first round at all three tournaments he has entered, while Berlocq is ascending rapidly. He has leapt from World No. 60 at the start of the year to a career-high No. 37 on the strength of a 11-4 record on clay, the third best performance among all ATP players.

Berlocq’s second round opponent will be Germany’s Bjorn Phau, who played ten games in Monday’s day session before opponent Diego Junqueira retired with a hip flexor injury, trailing 6-1, 3-0. Berlocq and Phau met just two weeks ago in a first round match at the Sony Ericsson Open. Phau won that encounter in straight sets, though the two have never faced each other in an ATP event on clay.

Houston Qualifying Round-up – Haas Out with Knee Injury

By Joe McGovern

HOUSTON, Texas – Four players had their passports stamped for the main draw as the qualifying competition came to a close today at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships. Go Soeda, the top seed in the qualifying draw and the second highest ranked player from Japan after Kei Nishikori, advanced without picking up his racquet when 2004 Houston champion Tommy Haas pulled out with a right knee injury. Soeda will face his countryman Tatsuma Ito tomorrow in the first round.

Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos, a semifinalist in Houston two years ago, battled for two hours and 46 minutes to get past Czech veteran Jan Hernych, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. Ricardo Mello of Brazil overpowered Romania’s Catalin-Ionut Gard, 6-3, 6-3. Zeballos will take on another Romanian, Adrian Ungur, in his first main draw match, while Mello will face defending champion Ryan Sweeting.

And 33-year-old Michael Russell defeated a player 13 years his junior, UCLA grad Daniel Kosakowski, 6-4, 6-1, to book his sixth main draw appearance in Houston. Russell’s best career result here was a second round showing in 2007, but he is hoping his local appeal – he and his wife make their home half a mile from the famed Galleria Mall in Houston – will boost his potential to go deeper in the draw.

“I’m always more motivated when it comes to the bigger tournaments,” said Russell, “but how often do you get to play with your friends and neighbors cheering from the stands?” He faces off against Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Tuesday.
