ATP Bangkok Tournament Moves to Shenzhen, China

(November 21, 2013) The ATP Board of Directors has approved the relocation of the World Tour 250 event from Bangkok to Shenzhen, China. The tournament will take place September 22-28 at the Shenzhen Longgang Sports Center with more than 20 outdoor match courts.

Alison Lee, ATP executive vice president,on the move: “China has long been a growing market for men’s professional tennis and we’re delighted to strengthen our presence in the region through the addition of this ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Shenzhen. The opportunities for growth in China continue to abound, and we look forward to working with the tournament organizers in delivering a first-class event in 2014. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported the Thailand Open in Bangkok over the past 11 years.”
China thus becomes the first country outside the United States to host ATP World Tour 250, 500 and Masters 1000 tournaments.

A sharp decrease in attendance lead to the relocation of the event since the 2007 retirement of Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan

Li Na Captures First Shenzhen Open

LiNaMontreal

(January 5, 2013) China’s Li Na won a battle with Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 on Saturday to capture the inaugural Shenzhen Open. The top seed and hometown favorite overcame her 10 double faults and a 2-5 deficit in the final set for her seventh title and second tournament win in her home country.

“Klara played well and I managed my mood swings well, and I’m glad I made it,” Li said. “Winning the title certainly helps boost my confidence for the coming weeks, but it also depends on how I’m playing on the courts. Confidence itself won’t guarantee a win. But I’m very happy to win and the Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open was a great tournament – I believe it will get even better in future years.”

“It was about a few points today but she really proved she’s a top player – she played her best from 5-all,” Zakopalova said after teh match. “She’s playing unbelievably fast and flat, and she’s hitting her backhand down the line very well. To me she’s one of the Top 3 players right now and I hope she can make it there.

“There’s no way to be sad about losing – I lost to a top player and I’m happy to reach the final.”
