World TeamTennis Announces 2013 Schedule

(March 6, 2013) NEW YORK, N.Y. – The schedule for the 38th season of World TeamTennis has been released. The regular season runs July 7-24, with conference championships scheduled for Thursday, July 25, and concludes with the Mylan WTT Finals on Sunday, July 28.

The season begins on Sunday, July 7 with six of the eight teams in action. But the focus will be on Monday, July 8, when the back-to-back champion WashingtonKastles host their rivals, the New York Sportimes at Kastles Stadium at the Wharf in Washington, D.C.

The Kastles have not lost a match during the past two seasons, winning the 2011 and 2012 Mylan WTT titles. Washington edged Sacramento in the 2012 Finals to complete their second consecutive undefeated season and hoisted the King Trophy for the third time in franchise history. Heading into the 2013 Mylan WTT season, the Kastles have won 32 consecutive matches, including two championship finals.

Their streak ranks among sports’ best and is the second longest in major pro sports league history. The Kastles are one win shy of tying the mark of 33 consecutive wins, held by the NBA’s 1971-72 Lakers. If the Kastles can win their home opener, they will have the opportunity to set a new record on their home court on July 9 when 2012 Finals MVP Venus Williams joins the lineup.

Williams and the Kastles will also visit the League’s newest team, the Irving, Texas-based Texas Wild, on July 10. The Wild are led by the world’s top ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan who will make their home debut on July 20.

Several of tennis’ biggest names are playing Mylan World TeamTennis this summer. Andy Roddick will play five matches for the Springfield Lasers, while rising American star Sloane Stephens joins the Philadelphia Freedoms for home matches on July 16 and 17, and road matches on July 15 and 20.

Mardy Fish returns to Mylan WTT action, playing home matches for the Sacramento Capitals on July 10, 12 and 13.

Other top names set for Mylan WTT action this summer include Mark Philippoussis of the Boston Lobsters and Sam Querrey of the Sacramento Capitals. Philippoussis will play on the road in Texas on July 13 and several home matches still to be determined. Querrey helps the Capitals close out the regular season with matches on July 21, 22, 23 and 24.

Each of the eight teams will play 14 matches – seven home, seven away. Eastern Conference teams are the Boston Lobsters, New York Sportimes, Philadelphia Freedoms and Washington Kastles. Western Conference teams are Orange County Breakers, Sacramento Capitals, Springfield Lasers and Texas Wild. The top two teams from both the Western and Eastern Conference advance to their respective Conference Championships on July 25. The Mylan WTT Finals presented by GEICO, will be contested on July 28 on the home court of the Eastern Conference Champion.

Team lineups will be finalized next week in Indian Wells at the Mylan WTT Roster Draft on Tuesday, March 12 at Noon EST on WTT.com. Marquee players typically play a limited schedule while roster players play the full 3-week season.

Andy Roddick, Sloane Stephens Lead World TeamTennis Player Draft

(February 12, 2013) NEW YORK, N.Y. – Andy Roddick is returning to the tennis
courts this summer.

The former world number one was the top pick in Tuesday’s World
TeamTennis Marquee Draft. Roddick, who first started with Mylan WTT in
2000, will play for the Springfield Lasers. This will be Roddick’s 7th
Mylan WTT season and his first since 2010.

“I first played World TeamTennis when I was just starting out and have
played throughout my career so I’m excited to be back,” said Roddick. “I’ve
always liked the competition and the fan energy. I love being on a team and
am looking forward to playing for the Springfield Lasers this July.”

Sloane Stephens, a young American who is currently ranked No. 17 on the WTA
Tour, was selected by the Philadelphia Freedoms with their first-round pick.
The 20-year-old Stephens first played Mylan World TeamTennis in 2009 as part
of an all-amateur USTA team.

The newest Mylan WTT franchise, Texas Wild, will bring the world’s best
doubles team to their new home court in Irving, Texas. The Wild, who
relocated to Texas this year after 20 seasons in Kansas City, protected the
rights to Bob and Mike Bryan who are back for their 11th season.

Venus Williams, who led the Washington Kastles to their second straight
undefeated season and championship title in 2012, returns to the nation’s
capital for her 10th Mylan WTT season. The three-time champion Kastles will
be taking a 32-match win streak into their 2013 season opener.

Two of the top Americans on the ATP Tour will once again play for the
Sacramento Capitals. The Caps protected their rights to Sam Querrey and
Mardy Fish. Querrey is ranked No. 20 on the ATP Tour and Fish is No. 32.

In a trade completed prior to Tuesday’s draft, the Boston Lobsters acquired
the rights to Mark Philippoussis from the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Teams will complete their lineups next month when the Mylan WTT Roster Draft
is held March 12 in Indian Wells, Calif. Dates for all Mylan WTT matches
will be announced during the week of March 4 when the 2013 schedule is
released.

Eastern Conference teams are the Boston Lobsters, New York Sportimes,

Dates for 2013 World TeamTennis Season Announced

NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 30, 2013) – The 2013 schedule for World TeamTennis will start on Sunday, July 7, with 59 matches scheduled throughout July. League officials today released the dates for the 38th season of Mylan WTT, which concludes with the WTT Finals on Sunday, July 28.

Eight teams will compete in two conferences during the regular season which concludes on Wednesday, July 24. The top two teams from both the Western and Eastern Conference advance to the 2013 Mylan WTT Conference Championships which will be hosted on Thursday, July 25 by the top-seeded team in each Conference. The 2013 Mylan WTT Finals will be contested on the home court of the Eastern Conference Champions.

The Finals are being moved back to their traditional July spot following a one-year move to a September final due to 2012 Olympics scheduling.

Team schedules for the three-week regular season will be announced in early March. The three-time champion Washington Kastles, who won their second consecutive WTT title last summer with back-to-back undefeated 16-0 seasons, will be taking a 32-match win streak into their 2013 season opener.

Each of the eight teams will play 14 matches – seven home, seven away. Eastern Conference teams are the Boston Lobsters, New York Sportimes, Philadelphia Freedoms and Washington Kastles. Western Conference teams are Orange County Breakers, Sacramento Capitals, Springfield Lasers and the yet-unnamed Irving, Texas-based team which recently relocated from Kansas City. The Texas team is currently holding a Name Your Team contest through January 31 at www.WTT.com/Texas.

Team lineups will start to be developed at the Mylan WTT Marquee Draft on Tuesday, February 12, with the rosters finalized at the Mylan WTT Roster Draft on Tuesday, March 12. Both drafts are scheduled for Noon EST on WTT.com.

Sacramento Capitals advance to WTT Finals with 25-15 victory over Orange County Breakers

CHARLESTON, S.C. (September 14, 2012) — There has been a lot of talk about the Washington Kastles historic 30-match win streak leading into the WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO, but the Sacramento Capitals will have an opportunity to make history of their own after defeating the Orange County Breakers 25-15 to win the WTT Western Conference Championship and a spot in Sunday’s WTT Finals at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.

The Capitals will be vying for a League-best seventh Championship title on Sunday when they face the winner of Saturday’s New York Sportimes-Washington Kastles Eastern Conference Championship match.

Sacramento jumped out to an early lead with a first set win in men’s singles. Kevin Anderson overpowered the Breakers’ John-Patrick Smith 5-3. Anderson started mixed doubles and won the first game on the South African’s big serve before Caps coach Wayne Bryan brought in doubles great Mark Knowles to join Coco Vandeweghe. Knowles was spectacular, hitting winners and leading the Caps to a 5-4 set win with Yasmin Schnack, who replaced Vandeweghe at 2-2.

Sacramento took a commanding 15-8 halftime lead after Anderson and Knowles overpowered Smith and Travis Parrott in men’s doubles, 5-1. Coco Vandeweghe edged the Breakers’ Jana Juricova 5-4 in women’s singles to give the Caps an eight-game lead going into the final set.

Schnack and Asia Muhammad closed out the victory for Sacramento with a 5-3 win over Groenefeld and Juricova in women’s doubles.

WTT action continues at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. when Venus Williams leads the Washington Kastles against the New York Sportimes with John McEnroe. The Kastles are riding a 30-match win streak that started with their unbeaten 2011 season, giving them the second longest U.S. pro sports team win streak in history.

The roster for the Kastles includes Williams, Leander Paes, 2012 WTT Male MVP Bobby Reynolds, Anastasia Rodionova and Arina Rodionova. McEnroe will be joined by Jesse Witten, Robert Kendrick, Kveta Peschke and Ashley Harkleroad for the Sportimes.

Davenport and Kevin Anderson will lead the lineup of top tennis players
battling for the World TeamTennis Championship at the WTT Finals Weekend
presented by GEICO, Sept. 14-16, at the Family Circle Tennis Center in
Charleston, S.C.

Circle Tennis Center box office. Fans who purchase Terrace Level tickets
for Friday and Saturday through the FCTC Box Office will receive a free

Williams, who last month won the Olympic gold medal in doubles with her
sister Serena Williams, will join her Washington Kastles’ teammates

the Orange County Breakers take on the Sacramento Capitals in the Western
Conference Championship. The Breakers are the top-seed in the West and
will have WTT veteran Lindsay Davenport leading their lineup. The
three-time Grand Slam champion will be joined by WTT Male Rookie of the Year
John-Patrick Smith, Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Jana Juricova and Travis Parrott.

South African Kevin Anderson, currently ranked No. 34 in the world in
singles, leads the Sacramento squad that also includes former doubles world
No. 1 Mark Knowles, and young Americans Yasmin Schnack and Asia Muhammad.
Wayne Bryan, father of Olympic gold medalists Bob and Mike Bryan, is the
longtime coach of the Sacramento Capitals.

Kastles Complete Second Perfect Regular Season: Streak at 30

The Washington Kastles rewrote sports history on Saturday night by completing an unprecedented second consecutive undefeated World TeamTennis regular season with a 25-14 Overtime victory over the Springfield Lasers in Springfield, Mo.  This was the 30th consecutive win for the Kastles, who captured the 2011 WTT title with a 16-0 record.   The Kastles won all 14 regular season matches this summer and will try to continue their win streak in the WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO, Sept. 14-16, at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.  Washington is the top overall seed and is scheduled to face the New York Sportimes in the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

Washington Kastles Streak at 29; New York Sportimes, Orange County Breakers and Sacramento Capitals Complete Line-up for World TeamTennis Playoffs

The field for the WTT Finals presented by GEICO is set with three teams capturing the final playoff spots with victories on Friday evening.  The New York Sportimes, Orange County Breakers and Sacramento Capitals won their matches tonight to join the undefeated Washington Kastles for the WTT Finals Weekend, Sept. 14-16, in Charleston, S.C.

 

Sacramento clinched the final spot with a 23-21 Overtime win on their home court over the Philadelphia Freedoms.  The Capitals will face the Orange County Breakers in the Western Conference Finals on Friday, Sept. 14.  Washington and New York will battle for the East title on Saturday, Sept. 15.  The Conference champions advance to the WTT Finals on Sunday, Sept. 16.

 

The New York Sportimes advanced to the playoffs with their 22-16 victory over the Springfield Lasers earlier this evening in Springfield, Mo.

 

With their 21-13 victory over the Boston Lobsters, the Orange County Breakers advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and will be the top seed in the Western Conference Finals.

 

The Washington Kastles continued their march towards sports history tonight, winning their 29th consecutive match with a 22-17 victory over the Kansas City Explorers in Kansas City, Mo.  The Kastles, who won the 2011 World TeamTennis title with a 16-0 record, have not lost a WTT match since July 22, 2010.  Washington has won their first 13 matches of the 2012 WTT season and needs a victory on Saturday in Springfield for an unprecedented second consecutive undefeated regular season. The Kastles have the second longest pro sports win streak in history with 29 consecutive wins.  The longest pro sports team win streak is 33 games, held by the NBA’s 1971-72 Lakers.  The Kastles are the overall top seed for the World TeamTennis Finals Weekend .

Washington Kastles Extend Record Win Streak To 28 With 21-16 World TeamTennis Win Over NY Sportimes

NEW YORK, July 25, 2012 – The defending champion Washington Kastles won their World TeamTennis record 28th straight match, downing the host New York Sportimes, 21-16, at Sportime Randall’s Island Wednesday night.  The Kastles, who won the 2011 World TeamTennis title with a 16-0 record, have not lost a WTT match since July 22, 2010.

Washington (12-0) won the first three events, with Reynolds beating Jesse Witten, 5-3, in singles, the team of Edina Gallovits-Hall and Raquel Kops-Jones toppling Martina Hingis and Ashley Harkleroad in doubles, 5-2, and the men’s doubles tandem of Bobby Reynolds and Treat Huey upending Sportimes captain John McEnroe and Robert Kendrick, 5-3, for a 15-8 Washington lead.

Hingis earned a win over Gallovits-Hall, 5-1, to narrow the hosts’ deficit to 16-13.

But Washington closed out the win with a mixed doubles victory, the duo of Huey and Kops-Jones besting legends McEnroe and Hingis, 5-3.

In addition, at halftime, winners were announced from tryouts held on Saturday for boys and girls ages 8-14 at Sportime Randall’s Island for spots at the John McEnrore Tennis Academy.  Winners included Cameron Daniels, Oakland Gardens, N.Y.; Diane McCready, Brooklyn; Leonte Wilder, Plainfield, N.J.; Sean Wei, Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; Natalie Eordekian, Woodside, N.Y.; Palmer Clare, North Bellmore, N.Y.; Tomas Kopczynski, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; Amber O’Dell, Chesterfield, Mich.

The Sportimes (7-5) close out the regular season with road matches at Springfield (Mo.) on Friday and Kansas City on Saturday, needing one win or a loss by Boston and Philadelphia in either of those teams’ respective matches to clinch the second Eastern Conference playoff spot.  Washington will make the same trip, visiting Kansas City on Friday and Springfield Saturday.
