Brengle Wins Fresh Start Women’s Open

By McCarton Ackerman

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., February 17, 2013 – The third edition of the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run Club concluded on Sunday with the singles final taking place in front of a packed house. No. 6 seed Madison Brengle completed a dream week by winning the title without losing a set, taking 14 of the last 16 points to defeat No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-4.

“I knew I had to play really well because she beat me in three sets the last time we played,” said Brengle. “She’s so consistent and I knew every point was going to be a grind, so I really had to stay focused out there.”

Brengle grabbed the first break of the match and raced out to a 2-0 lead in the opening set. Hitting every ball deep and down the middle of the court, the consistency of Brengle began to frustrate her higher ranked opponent, who hit numerous errors throughout in the early stages of the match.

In the second set, Gibbs began to take the ball earlier and step into the middle of the court. The plan worked as she raced out to a 4-2 lead, but the high risk tennis ultimately proved to be too much to handle. As Brengle began to track even more shots down and go for winners when opportunities arose, she reeled off four consecutive games to take the title.

This is the fourth USTA Pro Circuit title of Brengle’s career and her third at the $25,000 level. She has been at this tournament for all three years it has taken place, compiling an 11-2 record here and also reaching the finals in 2011.

“The courts suit my game quite well and I have a good feel of the timing on them,” said Brengle. “I also really like the town because there are so many good restaurants, so I’m happy to spend the week here.”

Despite the loss, Gibbs was optimistic about her tennis. The reigning NCAA singles and doubles champion said that while no official decision has been made, she is “90% sure” she will turn pro at the end of this year.

“This week has kind of reinforced that decision for me,” said Gibbs. “I feel like I’m playing at a top 100 level now and hope to make Wimbledon my first tournament as a professional.”

All-American Final in Rancho Santa Fe As Brengle Faces Gibbs

By McCarton Ackerman

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., February 16, 2013 – The third edition of the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run Club continued on Saturday with both singles semifinals and the doubles final being played. An all-American singles final was officially locked in after No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs and No. 6 seed Madison Brengle moved into the finals without the loss of a set this week.

In the first semifinal of the day, Gibbs held the lead throughout the entire match against qualifier Tetyana Arefyeva of Ukraine, easing into the final with a 6-4, 6-3 win. After last year’s US Open, the reigning NCAA champion took nearly three months off to recover from an abdominal strain and has been working her way back into form since.

“I struggled a little bit early on in the college season and so it wasn’t like I feeling ultra confident coming in, but this tournament has been perfect for me in terms of being able to play consecutive matches,” said Gibbs. “I’ve been working through some things this week and getting past some psychological leaps to get back on top of my game.”

The 19-year-old is ranked at a career high of No. 199 on the WTA Tour after a strong summer which saw her win the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Denver, Colo. and win a round at the WTA Tour event in Stanford. So far in 2013, she has reached the second round of qualifying at the Australian Open.

“I was expecting a little bit of relief from college tennis in terms of being expected to win every match, but being the No. 2 seed here kind of changed that,” said Gibbs. “Once I got past the first couple of rounds, I really started to loosen up and feel like I did what I needed to do as far as proving myself.”

In the second semifinal of the day, Brengle used her steady baseline game to roll past Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-1. Brengle is making her third consecutive appearance in Rancho Santa Fe and reached the finals here in 2011.

“I think I’ve been getting better every match this week,” said Brengle. “I’ve been working really hard on my fitness and feel like I can run down almost any ball now.”

Brengle, currently ranked No. 237 on the WTA Tour, has yet to drop a set this week. She won the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event last March in Fort Walton Beach, Flor., but struggled with health issues in the second half of the year. After having surgery in the off-season, Brengle said she is now playing without pain for the first time in months.

“It was definitely affecting my game for a lot of last year,” said Brengle. “It’s never fun to play when you’re in pain, so I’m just glad to be out there and healthy.”

In an all-American doubles final, Asia Muhammed and Allie Will easily defeated Anamika Bhargava and Macall Harkins 6-1, 6-4. This is Will’s second doubles title on the USTA Pro Circuit this year after winning at the $25,000 event last month in Port St. Lucie, Flor. Muhammed has won six USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles throughout her career, including two in 2012.

The singles final between Gibbs and Brengle will take on place on Sunday at 10:00am PST.

American Brengle Advances at Rancho Santa Fe

(February 15, 2013) RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – On Friday at the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run  the tournament is still on track for an all-American singles final after No. 6 seed Madison Brengle and No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs advanced to the semifinals with straight sets wins.

In the first match of the day, Brengle used her steady baseline game to rattle Tara Moore of Great Britain, reeling off the final eight games to advance 6-3, 6-0. She will play Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria in the semifinals.

No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs faced her biggest test of the tournament in former world No. 1 junior Irina Khromacheva of Russia, the tournament’s No. 7 seed, but stormed through the first eight games of the match on her way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The reigning NCAA champion has also not dropped a set in her three matches so far. She will play qualifier Tetyana Arefyeva of Ukraine in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Both semifinal singles and the doubles final will take place during Saturday’s schedule of play. The first match will see an all-American doubles final pitting Anamika Bhargava and Macall Harkins against Asia Muhammed and Allie Will, followed by Nicole Gibbs squaring off against Tetyana Arefyeva and Madison Brengle against Elitsa Kostova.

American Qualifier Marand Stuns Craybas at Fresh Start Women’s Open

By  McCarton Ackerman

(February 14, 2013) RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., – The third edition of the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run Club continued on Thursday with all second round singles and quarterfinal doubles matches being played. American qualifier Sanaz Marand pulled off a shock win against former top 40 player and US Olympian Jill Craybas, the No. 4 seed in the event, while reigning NCAA champion and No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs also moved into the quarterfinals.

In one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, Marand prevailed in a two-hour match against Craybas 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The win marked only the second time that Marand has also advanced to the quarterfinals of a challenger event in her career. In 2012, she jumped nearly 550 spots in the rankings and is currently at a career high of No. 501.

“It’s definitely my biggest win ever,” said Marand. “I’ve been trying to stay positive and go for my shots during this tournament in the same way that I do in training.”

The former UNC standout has won five USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles throughout her career, including three in 2012, but said a rigorous off-season training regimen has made her primed for a breakthrough in singles.

“I did a lot of strength training and off-court fitness in all those key areas you need for the sport,” she said. “You don’t really see the progress from that until a couple of months later and especially in a match like today that was over two hours, so it’s nice to see the hard work paying off.”

In the upset of the day, Tara Moore of Great Britain shocked No. 1 seed Irena Pavlovic of France 6-2, 6-4. The world No. 246 has already won two $10,000 futures events so far this year on the ITF Tour.

In other second round matches, Gibbs survived a tricky encounter against qualifier Mayo Hibi of Japan and prevailed 6-3, 6-4. No. 6 seed Madison Brengle of the US also eased through with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alize Lim of France, while former world No. 1 junior and No. 7 seed Irina Khromacheva of Russia recorded the first double bagel of the tournament by blitzing Sachie Ishizu of Japan 6-0, 6-0.

The 17-year-old Khromacheva, who has won three Grand Slam junior doubles titles including last year’s French Open, also won the biggest pro title of her career last June at the $25,000 event in Perigueux, France.

All quarterfinal singles matches and semifinal doubles matches will take place during Friday’s schedule of play. The feature match of the day will see No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs take on No. 7 seed Irina Khromacheva of Russia.

American Jennifer Elie Upsets No. 5 Seed at Fresh Start Women’s Open

By McCarton Ackerman

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., February 13, 2013 – The third edition of the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run Club continued on Wednesday with all remaining first round singles and doubles matches being played. Three seeded players were upset in their first round matches, but No. 1 seed Irena Pavlovic of France survived a nearly four-hour test to advance into the second round.

In the best result of the day among American women, Jennifer Elie recorded her first win of 2013 in dramatic fashion by upsetting No. 5 seed Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (5). Kudryavtseva is best known for defeating Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2008.

“I lost in the first round of all three events I’ve played this year, so I really wanted that one,” said Elie. “I knew I was going to have fight for every point and she wasn’t going to give it away, so I just tried to focus on that.”

The 26-year-old Elie is currently ranked at a career high of No. 305 on the WTA Tour. Her 2012 season included qualifying for the WTA event in Washington, D.C. and reaching the quarterfinals at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Denver, Colo. She also reached the semifinals of a $25,000 challenger in Bundaberg, Australia and won two consecutive $10,000 futures event in Caracas, Venezuela.

But after a rigorous off-season, the NYC native believes she has the ability to take her game into the top 200 and beyond.

“I changed my forehand and footwork a little bit, so I’m just getting used to moving and hitting the ball differently,” she said. “It makes me a little nervous at times because I’m not 100 percent used to doing it in match play, but it’s starting to come together.”

In the match of the day, No. 1 seed Irena Pavlovic of France survived a marathon against Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in prevailng 6-7 (1), 7-5, 7-6 (3). Pavlovic served for the opening set at 6-5, but lost 10 consecutive points on her way to dropping that initial set. She also served for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but fought off six break points on her second attempt at 6-5 to ultimately take the match. The world No. 182 won her first main draw Grand Slam match at last year’s French Open.

In other matches, No. 7 seed Madison Brengle of the US regrouped after a slow start in her second set to defeat Yi-Fan Xu of China 6-2, 7-5. San Diego teenager Christina Makarova, a wild card into the event, rallied from 1-6, 0-3 down to advance past Samantha Murray of Great Britain 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1).

In addition to Kudryavtseva, No. 3 seed Julie Coin was also upset by qualifier Tatyana Arefyeva of Belarus, while No. 8 seed Ana Vrljic of Croatia fell to Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria. Two matches had yet to be completed as of press time; No. 4 seed Jill Craybas of the US against fellow American Chieh-Yu Hsu in a first round singles match, and a first round doubles match featuring Samantha Murray of Great Britain and Lenka Wienerova of Slovakia against the American team of Louisa Chirico and Elizabeth Lumpkin.

All second round singles and quarterfinal doubles matches will take place during Thursday’s schedule of play. The feature match of the day will see No. 2 seed and current NCAA women’s singles champion Nicole Gibbs take on Mayo Hibi of Japan.

NCAA Champion Gibbs Advances at Fresh Start Women’s Open

Nicole Gibbs

Nicole Gibbs

By McCarton Ackerman

(February 12, 2013) RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., - The third edition of the Fresh Start Women’s Open at the Morgan Run Club continued on Sunday with all final round qualifying matches and select first round main draw matches. Last year’s NCAA champion and No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs survived a tough two-set win, while former world No. 1 junior Irina Khromacheva of Russia also advanced into the second round.

Gibbs breezed out to a 6-1, 4-1 lead against Zuzana Zlochova of Slovakia, but struggled to find the range on her serve in the later stages of the match. However, she saved her best tennis in that set for the tiebreaker, winning the first four points on her way to a 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory.

“I got a little bit tight and started thinking about recent matches I haven’t played well in,” said Gibbs. “But that was a really important, gritty second-set win for me in terms of my confidence and knowing that I’m able to fight out the ones that aren’t super pretty.”

Gibbs has returned to Stanford University for her junior year and is competing on the women’s tennis team, but has sporadically played in pro events this year including the qualifying for the Australian Open. The 19-year-old is currently ranked at a career high of No. 199 on the WTA Tour.

“Juggling everything has definitely gotten the best of me at times, but you have to just compartmentalize as best as you can,” said Gibbs. “When I’m on the tennis court, I’m thinking about tennis. When I’m at school, I’m thinking about school.”

In the only other main draw singles match of the day, No. 7 seed Khromacheva survived a battle of teenagers against promising 15-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 7-6 (2), 6-2. The 17-year-old Khromacheva, who has won three Grand Slam junior doubles titles including last year’s French Open, also won the biggest pro title of her career last June at the $25,000 event in Perigueux, France.

In final round qualifying action, Americans Asia Muhammed, Jennifer Brady and Sanaz Marand were among the eight players to move into the main draw. They will play their opening round singles matches tomorrow.

All remaining first round singles and doubles matches will take place during Wednesday’s schedule of play. The feature match of the day will see No. 1 seed Irena Pavlovic of France take on Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.
