(July 1, 2025) The upsets continued at Wimbledon on Tuesday as No. 2 seed Coco Gauff of the United States fell to by Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 7-6 (3), 6-1. Other major seeds ousted were No. 3 seeds on both sides of the draw in Alexander Zverev and Jessica Pegula, No. 5 Zheng Qinwen, No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti, No. 15 Karolina Muchova, No. 26 Marta Kostyuk and No. 25 Magdalena Frech, No. 18 Ugo Humbert, No. 27 Denis Shapovalov, No. 28 Alexander Bublik and No. 30 Alex Michelsen.
Gauff became the third Top 5 seed of the day on the women’s side of the draw to lose.
“It was a bit tricky match,” Yastremska said after the match. “I was actually on fire.
“I really, really enjoyed playing on Court 1. I have good memories from this court, even though last year I lost there to Donna Vekic. I still have a nice memory. This court brings me a lot of energy. I really felt it today.”
“I feel pretty good on grass,” Yastremska said. “I had a couple matches. My main goal was for today’s match to go on court and be myself, to be open, and to be free with my decisions and with the way I’m playing. So I think I’ve done it well today.”
Gauff has now lost in the Wimbledon first round in two of the last three years
“[Yastremska] played great,” said the French Open winner Gauff in her post-match news conference. “I saw the draw and knew it would be a tough match for me. … I played her on clay, and I think that surface suits me a little better, [and] it was still a tough three-setter. “I knew today would be tough. I had chances, but yeah, it is what it is.”
