(August 6, 2017) In a high-quality slug fest, No. 3 seed Madison Keys won her first hardcourt tournament beating friend and American countrywoman sixth seed CoCo Vandeweghe 7-6(4), 6-4 to win the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

Both women armed with strong serves had only one break between them during their first head-to-head match-up. That came in the ninth game of the second set, when Keys broke coming back in the game.

This was Keys third career WTA tournament victory. She had been sidelined at the beginning of the year with a left wrist injury. Keys eliminated Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza in the semifinals.

After Keys won the match, both women embraced at the net and later Keys went to sit on Vandeweghe’s lap and then sat next to her until the trophy ceremony.

“It feels amazing to have a title at home and on hardcourt,” said the 22-year-old Keys.

“It means a lot. It’s my first title in the States against a friend.”

“It was definitely a really tight two-set match,” Vandeweghe said. “It was fun to play. It was fun to kind of play a friend and have an all-American final. It was enjoyable, not so much enjoyable losing but it was a high-quality match and that’s all you can ask for from yourself is to try the best you can to the best of your abilities.”

“It definitely feels really good,” Keys said about the win. “It hasn’t been the easiest season, but it finally feels like I’m on the right track and feeling really good about my tennis again.”

Both women head to Toronto to play Rogers Cup. Keys will play Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the first round while Vandeweghe faces Agnieszka Radwanska.
