Top seed and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Mexican Open after a recurrence of a leg injury which forced him to retire from the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last month.
The 16-time major champion was scheduled to face fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the opening round on Wednesday night in Acapulco.
The two-time champion 2005, 2013 who was last year’s losing finalist has had to withdraw or retire during his last seven tournaments – Acapulco, Melbourne, Brisbane, London, Paris, Basel and Shanghai.
“Tough one, of course. Yesterday in the last practice I felt something,” Nadal said. “I went to the hospital this morning to check it, to do an MRI and I still have some liquid there, so I need to keep doing tests to know what exactly is going on. The spot is really similar to Australia, so I need to be sure about what’s going on the next couple of days, and then we’re going to work hard to try to recover as soon as possible.”
“The doctors told me it’s impossible to play. I’m in pain and I’m not going to compete in those conditions…There’s a significant risk of making the injury worse and the truth is I don’t have a choice.”
