Roberta Vinci Retires from Professional Tennis, Plays Last WTA Match at Rome

From the WTA Tour: (May 14, 2018) Former WTA World No.1 doubles player Roberta Vinci played her last competitive match today at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, falling to Aleksandra Krunic in three sets.

The Italian had an impressive singles career, winning a total of 10 WTA singles titles and reached a career high of World No.7. In 2015, Vinci reached her first Grand Slam singles final at the US Open in what was the first all-Italian Grand Slam final, falling to Flavia Pennetta in the championship match.

Vinci enjoyed an even more remarkable career in doubles, capturing 25 WTA doubles titles. She completed the career Grand Slam by lifting all four major trophies – including back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2013 and 2014 – all with compatriot Sara Errani. Vinci earned her first ever WTA Finals qualification in doubles in 2001 (w/Testud) and made three additional appearances with Errani from 2012-2014. On October 15, 2012 Vinci rose to the WTA World No.1 doubles ranking and held onto the top spot for a total of 110 weeks.

“All the results that I had. Top 10, Slams, and I’m so proud of myself,” said Vinci. “[There were] ups and downs, of course, in this, but I’m really proud of my tennis, myself and my career.”
