Roger Federer Moves Back up to No. 1, Barty, Gasquet and Krunic Claim Titles
(June 17, 2018) Roger Federer again took off the clay season this year and won the Mercedes Cup in his first outing back on the tennis tour. Federer, who moved up to the No. 1 ranking by virtue of reaching the Stuttgart final, defeated Milos Raonic the No. 7 seed 6-4, 7-6(3). The 20-time major champion now has a 16-match win streak on grass, going back to Wimbledon and Halle last year.
“I’m really happy. I thought it was a good final from my side. I think I played very well throughout the tournament, actually, having not played for a while. It’s a great comeback for me,” Federer said after the win. “Maybe I was a little bit better on the bigger points. Of course I’m so happy to have won here, finally, in Stuttgart.”
Next stop for the Swiss will be the Gerry Weber Open in Halle Germany, where he will be looking for his tenth trophy there.
