SAN JOSÉ, CA (July 23, 2018) – The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic added more star power on Monday when two-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Garbiñe Muguruza joined the player field for the 2018 tournament scheduled for July 30-August 5 at San José State University.

Tickets are on-sale now at www.MubadalaSVC.com.

Muguruza strengthens an already star-studded lineup that includes 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, defending tournament champion Madison Keys, 2017 singles finalist CoCo Vandeweghe and 2016 champion Johanna Konta.

“Garbiñe is incredibly talented and we are excited that she has chosen to play our event,” said Tournament Director Vickie Gunnarsson. “It is amazing to think that we now have four players that have won multiple Grand Slam singles titles and been ranked No. 1 in the world competing in San José. Having this quality of a player field in our first event with our new title sponsor, and in this new venue, is truly special.”

Muguruza, currently ranked No. 7 in the world, has won six career WTA singles titles including a win in Monterrey earlier this year. She won her first Grand Slam title in Roland Garros in 2016, and then followed it up with a Wimbledon title in 2017.

In September 2017, she ascended to the World No. 1 ranking becoming the first Spanish woman since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1995 to reach the top spot.

In addition to her singles success, she has won five career WTA doubles titles including the 2014 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic title with partner Carla Suárez Navarro.

Other players to watch in San José include World No. 15 Elise Mertens, a three-time winner this year on the WTA tour, and several young Americans looking to work their way up the rankings including Danielle Collins, Allison Riske and Sachia Vickery.

Formerly known as the Bank of the West Classic in Palo Alto, the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic is a weeklong WTA Premier event bringing the worlds of tennis and technology together in a festival of sports and entertainment. The new venue at San José State University will provide a high-end, family friendly atmosphere and will put fans close to the action as they watch their favorite stars compete.

Highlighting the best the region has to offer, the tournament will showcase a complete entertainment experience including locally sourced cuisine, fine wine and cheese selections, interactive fan exhibitions, premier hospitality options, daily autograph signings, and of course, incredible tennis action.

Featuring a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw the tournament will bring the best female tennis players in the world to the Bay Area and serves as the opening women’s event of the US Open Series.
