(October 14, 2018) Juan Martin Del Potro fractured his knee during his Thursday match in Shanghai where he was forced to retire against eventual finalist Borna Coric. The Argentine, who was the third seed, fell near the end of the first set. He called it quits after losing the first set 7-5.
In a Sunday press release, del Potro’s spokesperson Jorge Viale wrote:
The medical studies carried out on Saturday showed that Juan Martín del Potro suffered a fracture of his right patella bone in Shanghai.
“It’s a very difficult moment. I feel very sad. It’s a hard blow that leaves me without strength. It’s very difficult for me to think about recovery again, I did not expect this to happen,” said Delpo, who is wearing a splint on his right leg.
In the coming days, the doctors will evaluate the recovery process needed to return to court.
