Marin Cilic Clinches Second Davis Cup Crown for Croatia

(November 25, 2018) Two years ago Marin Cilic let a two-set lead on Juan Martin del Potro slip in the Davis Cup final in Zagreb. Argentina won the match and the tie to win their first Davis cup title. Cilic had no letdown whatsoever on Sunday. The 2014 US Open champion clinched the Davis Cup title for Croatia 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 over France’s Lukas Pouille to his country the win 3-1 in Lille, France. This is Croatia’s second Davis Cup title, they first won it in 2005.
This would make the last “traditional” Davis Cup final. The competition is changing its format in 2019.
Madrid Chosen a Host City for 2019 and 2020 Davis Cup Finals
“It’s not every day that you become a world champion,” Cilic said after the win. “For us, it’s a dream come true, for this nation, we are so passionate, you can see the fans. And I feel that in Croatia it’s going to be incredible too.”
“This is one of the best teams we ever had, it’s like a dream team,” said Croatia Davis Cup captain Zeljko Krajan. “After seven years on the bench, it’s an honor for me to be here. My singles players not only didn’t lose a set, they didn’t lose serve in three matches which is an unbelievable achievement and shows you the quality that we produced.”
