TOP SEEDS TO PLAY OPENING MATCHES ON TUESDAY
AT USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS Tuesday’s Matches to begin at 8 a.m. (PST) at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
LA JOLLA, Calif. – (November 26, 2018) – After receiving first-round byes on Monday, the top seeds at the United States Tennis Association National 40 Hard Court Championships will play second-round matches on Tuesday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif., the No. 1 men’s singles seed, will face unseeded Trent Aaron of San Diego at 11 a.m. Aaron blanked Todd Granius of Laguna Niguel, Calif., 6-0, 6-0 in Monday’s first-round action.
Second-seeded Stuart Duncan of Laguna Beach, Calif., will play unseeded Rob Horsch of Laguna Niguel, Calif., at noon. Horsch eliminated Nelson Alapi of La Jolla, Calif., 6-2, 6-1 on Monday.
In the women’s singles division, top-seed and two-time defending champion Hiromi Sasano of San Diego takes on unseeded Cindi Juncal of San Clemente, Calif., at 10 a.m. Second-seeded Amanda Parson Siegel of Henderson, Nev., is scheduled to meet unseeded Mariko Atoji of San Diego at 11:45 a.m.
Greenwald is looking to win his third straight USTA National 40 Hard Court men’s singles title and fourth overall. The 52-year-old sport psychology consultant and licensed therapist won his first singles title in 2009.
“I just love to play and I love to compete. I appreciate that I’m still able to come out (to La Jolla). The fact that I’m seeded number one doesn’t have any particular weight for me,” said Greenwald, the two-time defending men’s singles champion. “I still move pretty well and that helps me. I still feel fit and I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself. I want to win of course, but more importantly I want to play well.”
In other men’s first-round action on Monday, 12th-seeded Trent Miller of San Diego eliminated Peter Wernemar of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., 6-0, 6-4 while another San Diegan, 16th-seeded Kerry Safdie advanced with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Carter Hedrick of Manhattan Beach, Calif.
