Top Seeds Advance at USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships

TOP MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SEEDS EASILY ADVANCE

AT USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

All Tournament Matches on Court 1 to be Live-Streamed

LA JOLLA, Calif. – (November 27, 2018) – Top seeded Hiromi Sasano of San Diego easily advanced to the women’s quarterfinals of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships with a 6-1, 6-0 second-round victory over Cindi Juncal of San Clemente, Calif., in 38 minutes.

Sasano, the two-time defending singles champion, is scheduled to play seventh-seeded Quynh Le of Irvine, Calif., Wednesday at 10 a.m.  Second-seeded Amanda Parson Siegel of Henderson, Nev., also advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals as she eliminated San Diego’s Mariko Atoji 6-1, 6-1. She will face eighth-seeded Amy Jamieson of Prior Lake, Minn., at 11:15 a.m.

Coming into this year’s tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Sasano is attempting to win her third straight singles title, but admits her preparation has been limited as her priorities have changed since the birth of her daughter seven and half months ago.

“This year is a little different. It’s been very busy. It’s not so much about the tennis, but more about the baby,” said Sasano. “I’m always happy to be back here. The club is nice and I feel very comfortable. I still enjoy it.”

In the men’s singles division, No. 1 seeded Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif., dispatched unseeded Trent Aaron of San Diego 6-2, 6-1 in 57 minutes to move into Wednesday’s third round, where he will meet 13th-seeded Andrew Cheney of Phoenix at 11:15 a.m.

Second-seeded Stuart Duncan of Laguna Beach, Calif., advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over unseeded Rob Horsch of Laguna Niguel, Calif.  Duncan, a singles semifinalist in 2016, will take on another Laguna Niguel resident, 14th-seeded Pavel Levitanus at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Two former tournament champions who won multiple singles titles also reached the third round. Third-seeded Tony Bujan of Santa Ana, Calif., and fourth-seeded Oren Motevassel of Beverly Hills, Calif., both advanced with straight-set wins.
