Mastercard Hopman Cup 2019 by the numbers
Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic won their second consecutive Mastercard Hopman Cup and Switzerland’s fourth title yesterday.
They defeated world No.2 Angelique Kerber and world No.4 Alexander Zverev of Germany in a stunning final decided in a winner-takes-all point in the mixed doubles.
After eight days of world class tennis action and a record total tournament attendance of 110,364, this was the tournament by the numbers.
On-court action
- Switzerland defeated Germany to win the Mastercard Hopman Cup in 2019

- Eight players returned, including four from 2018: Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Alexander Zverev, Alize Cornet, Belinda Bencic, Angelique Kerber, Ashleigh Barty and Matthew Ebden
- Serena Williams (USA) recorded the fastest women’s serve of the tournament at 195 km/h
- Alexander Zverev (GER) clocked the fastest men’s serve at 220km/h.
Off-court action
- During the event the world’s best tennis players have had the chance to experience various parts of Perth, Western Australia:
- Roger Federer visited the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park. He played tennis with a group of local young tennis players before meeting a Western Rock Lobster at the Lobster Shack in Cervantes
- Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev visited Rottnest Island and took the first ever Hopman Cup team selfie with a quokka. They also went ‘glass bottom’ kayaking at a one of the beaches on the island
- Ash Barty and Matt Ebden went to Community Coffee Co – a new café in Subiaco – where they made coffee before taking in the Australian inspired street art
- Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari met wombats, kangaroos and koalas at Caversham Wildlife Park. Tsitsipas also paid a visit to Rottnest Island
- Lucas Pouille and Alize Cornet took a surfing lesson with Surfing WA at Trigg Beach
- Katie Boulter glammed up for a photo shoot on top of RAC Arena overlooking the City of Perth ahead of the tournament’s NYE Gala
- Boulter and Cameron Norrie also took a jet boat ride down the iconic Swan River where they spotted a pod of dolphins and posed for photos with iconic Perth backdrops
- The Mastercard Hopman Cup New Year’s Eve Gala at Crown Towers was attended by more than 450 guests and saw all 16 players walk the carpet. The event featured interviews with Group A representatives Alexander Zverev, David Ferrer, Ash Barty and Alize Cornet and Group B representatives Serena Williams, Katie Boulter, Roger Federer and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The night included a special performance by string quartet Aquila as well as Tim Campbell.
Attendance
- A record-breaking 110,364 fans attended the Mastercard Hopman Cup in 2019, the largest tournament attendance in the event’s history
- The final between Switzerland and Germany saw 14,032, the tournament’s highest final attendance ever
- Tuesday 1 January’s night session between Switzerland and USA that saw Serena Williams face Roger Federer in mixed doubles was witnessed by 14,064 fans, the highest single attended session in the tournament’s history.
Media and broadcast
- More than 80 print, radio and broadcast media provided extensive media coverage of the event to media outlets around Australia and internationally including Switzerland, Germany, France, United Kingdom and the United States
- Channel Nine broadcast the tournament live across Australia for the first time with local Channel Nine Perth personalities Matthew Pavlich and Scherri-Lee Biggs among the presenters
- Tennis Australia managed the host broadcast of the tournament for the fifth straight year. Commentators for 2019 included Todd Woodbridge, Alicia Molik, John Fitzgerald, Mark Petchey, Casey Dellacqua and Peter Marcato
- Internationally, the tournament was broadcast to more than 200 territories by 16 different broadcast partners
- Broadcasts included China (IQIYI, CCTV), Japan (WOWOW) and Pan–Asia (Fox Sports Asia), along with Europe (Eurosport), New Zealand (Sky) Germany’s ZDF and ADR, Switzerland’s SSR SRG, Tennis Channel in the US, Africa (SuperSport), Canada (TVA), Latin America and the Caribbean (ESPN International), Middle East (beIn Sports) and India (Sony 6).
Digital and social media
- HopmanCup.com had 681,038 users, 1,420,873 visits and 3,667,633 pageviews from 29 December to 4 January
- As of 5 January, @hopmancup on Twitter grew by 15.29 per cent to 33,896 followers and generated 10.7 million impressions, 22.2k retweets, 102k likes and 1.8k replies
- The Hopman Cup Facebook page grew by17.28 per cent to 49,012 followers and featured a variety of performance updates, event colour and behind-the-scenes content. Total reach from 26 December to 5 January was 3,600,517 fans with 7,741,568 impressions, 71,286 likes, 4,912 comments, 4,964 shares and 497,151 video views
- The @hopmancup Instagram grew by 144.71 per cent to 37,196 followers by 5 January. Instagram stories was a daily feature offering fans a more organic experience of the event

New initiatives
- For the first time ever children (14 years and under) attended any Mastercard Hopman Cup day session for free
- The tournament had a bigger footprint from Yagan Square to RAC Arena in 2019, providing patrons with a Mastercard Hopman Cup experience as soon as they stepped off the bus or train. The champions walk, bespoke street art and live entertainment were on offer this week
- The Mastercard Hopman Cup held more activations and events around the city of Perth from November in the lead-up to the tournament
- Vegemite powered the tournament’s ballkids for the first time
- Dunlop was the official tennis ball partner
- La Roche-Posay joined the Hopman Cup family as the official sunscreen partner and ensured patrons had access to sunscreen via roaming staff throughout the RAC Arena precinct
- Uber signed on as the tournament’s official ride share partner.
A total of
- 2985 Dunlop tennis balls were used throughout the Mastercard Hopman Cup while 290 racquets were restrung for players
- 1,500 towels plus 120 personalised embroidered player towels were used
- 66 Vegemite ballkids aged 12-15 made up the 2019 Mastercard Hopman Cup squad
- Matches were officiated by 32 linespeople, four chair umpires and one referee from around Australia and the world
- Players were transported by a fleet of 16 Jaguar F Pace cars and three shuttles.
Community tennis and fan engagement
- The Mastercard Hopman Cup Trophy Tour returned for another year. The prized trophy and the tournament’s mascot ‘Hoppy’ visited 14 local schools, eight Red Ball competitions and more than 2350 school participants
- Fifty-four tennis clubs were involved in the Have A Hit On Us initiative offering all Hopman Cup ticketholders one hour of free court hire at participating clubs in WA
- More than 6000 children visited the Tennis West activation area, which included two Tennis Hot Shots courts and the Hit The Target inflatable at RAC Arena
- More than 180 Tennis Hot Shots participants had an on-court experience at the Mastercard Hopman Cup with 39 participants taking part in the coin toss initiative
- More than 8000 goodies were given away at the Mastercard Bankwest Human Vending machine making patrons time watching the tennis as enjoyable as possible
- Nova Boy mascot enjoyed a dance with Hoppy on Nova’s New Year’s Day
- Three brand new Jaguar cars were on display for patrons to see up close, including the new all electric Jaguar I Pace
- More than 400 fans enjoyed a mindful moment thanks to lululemon, the Official Mindfulness and Athletic Apparel Partner
- More than 3000 people tried to crack the code and win at the Channel Nine activation and three lucky winners walked away with a cash prize
- Thousands of fans enjoyed a taste of summer in a glass at The Garden Bar by Aperol Spritz and Coopers
- More than 85,000 hand waver country flags were handed out to patrons as City of Perth encouraged patrons to cheer for their favourite team during the tournament.
